Why did Christ choose to be the Son of a worker?  St. Joseph’s vocation represents someone who changes the world, because in using the materials of the world he symbolically transforms it.  A Catholic should be familiar with the definition of Capitalism, Social Darwinism, Prosperity Theology, Fascism, Socialism, Marxism, and Existentialism.  The true Christian view stands opposed to these philosophies, because it teaches that man is judged not simply by his work but by the quality of his character.  Even small works have value if they are done with great love for God.  “Whatever you do in word or work, do all in the name of Our Lord Jesus Christ.”

The Lasting Joy of Faith

3rd Sunday after Easter 2015
Today’s Epistle tells us of the importance of good example.  Many more conversions are made by good example than by preaching.  The “little while” during which the disciples would not see Christ described His passion, death, and descent into limbo.  The disciples were so attached to Our Lord that it was like death for them to be separated from Him.  After this “little while” in the tomb Christ predicted that He would rise again and would be seen by His followers once more.  Faith is a supernatural power that permits us to ascent with the mind and embrace with the will everything God has revealed, simply because He says so.  The fact of the Resurrection gives assurance to our faith and fills us with lasting joy.

Season of Conversion

Passion Sunday 2015
“The reason that you do not hear is because you are not of God.”  We should pray that these frightening words are never directed towards us.  We must ask ourselves who is more evil, the people in this Gospel who desire to put Christ to death, or all of us, who believe in Christ’s divinity and still continue to sin?  There is still time to hear the voice of God and change the direction of our lives.  This season of the Passion is given to us so we may make a conversion of life.  We must follow the example of the Apostles’ conversion in these final days of Lent.

The Father of Vocations

Feast of Saint Joseph 2015
When a person is given a vocation, he is always given the divine help necessary to reach his final goal of Heaven.  Even the people who miss their divine calling are given sufficient grace to save their souls.  Many people, especially in our days, lack confidence in God and are too afraid to fulfill their great calling in life.  St. Joseph was called to be the spouse of the Mother of God and the earthly representative of God the Father.  This was a vocation which was truly beyond human ability to fulfill.  The only doubts St. Joseph entertained were doubts about his own judgment.  He recognized his poverty in every way, but was filled with confidence in God.  Like the priest, St. Joseph had custody over the Body of the Son of God and was willing to lay down his life to protect Him.  The patron of all our needs is St. Joseph.

Lent Restores Peace

Not one word is said about punishment or damnation in the readings for this Mass, and that should give a hint to Catholics about the true spirit of this season.  There is no such thing as a private sin.  Not only are all our sins known to the heavenly court, but the whole universe is affected by them.  In the early years of the Church, public penitents were driven out of the churches, just as Adam was driven from Paradise after his sin.  This is a time of holiness, mercy, hope, and pardon, not condemnation and gloom.  We must begin Lent as we should examine our conscience, by looking at Our Lord and comparing ourselves with Him.  During Lent Christ pleads with us not to leave Him alone, so we may be united with Him forever.

Watch And Pray

St. Andrew was the first of the Apostles.  He traveled to Greece and even Russia, and ultimately gave his life by crucifixion in imitation of Our Lord.  We begin the new liturgical year and the reliving and re-presentation of the life of Christ, through which we are able to tap into the mysteries of His life.  We know the end of the world will come and the evil we endure now is only because of the good God will bring from it.  We must know the signs of the end so we may watch and pray, full of trust in Christ.

No Lasting City

This is the last day of the liturgical year, which is given to us as a reminder that we do not have our permanent home here on Earth.  We are reminded to be thankful and to be prepared for our coming judgment.  We stand during the Gospel to remind us that we must always be prepared to fulfill the will of God expressed in those words.  We learn of everyone’s sins at the Last Judgment.  We have been given great hope and expectation of being saved and that Christ will bring us to Heaven, so we may see the Trinity and be enraptured in that vision for all eternity.

We live a lifetime in a single year through the liturgy.  The liturgy inspires us to great confidence because it gives us trust in God.  By ourselves we are lowly and incapable of doing anything.  The Gospel demonstrates this great confidence which stems from faith.  We must pray for absolute faith in our God.  It is important for us to know why we are Catholics, and to review the many proofs of the one, true Church.  Unless a person comes to the conviction that the truths of the Catholic Faith are revealed by God, he cannot make an act of faith.

Time Of Hope

This week we have the Ember days which are of apostolic origin and beneficial to our spiritual life.  The season of Pentecost inspires us with confidence of being saved one day if we persevere in praying always so God will hear us.  The Gospel account shows the unspoken cry of the Widow of Naim moving Jesus to restore her son to life.  Our Holy Mother the Church is also in constant prayer for her children which moves the Divine Spouse to save us from the spiritual death of sin.  This continual prayer in the Church is through the liturgy and the Divine Office.  St. Augustine’s commentary for today is heartfelt as he recalls his own widow mother’s prayers that saved him from hell.  We think of our Mother of Sorrows who does the same for us.

Our Prayer for Hope

It would be a serious sin if we had no desire to grow in holiness. We can increase in every virtue when we attend Mass, but especially in our hope. We should pray for an increase of hope, and the more we pray the more assurance we have of entering Heaven. We see in the Gospel for this Mass that St. Peter was rewarded for his obedience. Without a trustful hope in God, we can achieve nothing. We must ignore the teachings of the world and place our confidence in God alone.
