Gaudete Sunday 2019 Today is a day of joy which is expressed in the rose color of the vestments. Our crosses seem small in comparison with Our Lord’s coming at Christmas which is so near now. Prayer is our best work as we prepare for the Nativity. We should thank God for His gifts, especially our holy Faith. Soon, He will come to save us. #20191215K
1st Sunday Of Advent 2019 The feast of St. Nicholas on Friday is a celebration of an heroic early bishop whose acts of charity have been carried on to our day in the figure of Santa Claus. Advent and the new liturgical year begin today and the Introit of the Mass is an appeal to beg God to protect us from the devil. The Epistle gives the plan for this season – cast out the works of darkness and put on the armor of light in preparation for Christmas. The Gospel continues the warning from last week about the end of the world and our facing God’s judgment. We will be thankful on that day for all the merit gained through our struggles for salvation. #20191201K
2nd Sunday in Lent St. Paul is preaching to people of his time who were being dragged down by the pagans, mostly by sins of impurity. In visions, the saints have seen children and young adults in Hell for sins of impurity so we must combat this. The Transfiguration is when Christ allowed His divinity to shine forth through His humanity. This was to strengthen the apostles for the trials ahead. We take the same encouragement for the rest of Lent. #20190317K
2nd Sunday in Lent 2018 During Lent it is important to stir up sorrow for our sins and to receive the Sacrament of Penance. The older form for the penitent to use in the confessional expressed aspects of this beautiful sacrament that we should appreciate. If received well, this sacrament can even make us holier than just before we sinned, for example we have St. Peter. The Gospel for this Sunday is about the Transfiguration and is meant to encourage us, as it did the Apostles, for the struggles we must face in the days ahead.
Laetare Sunday 2015 Penance has a variety of meanings. It refers to the infused virtue that inclines a person to hate his faults, the sacrament of penance, and the works we perform to make up for our sins. Mortification refers to works which put to death evil inclinations. Propitiation is an act by which someone who has been offended is now appeased. The Mass and our prayers are great works of propitiation. When we make satisfaction, we punish ourselves for our sins. Our sufferings may be offered to God as a form of satisfaction. Atonement refers to the union with God which is achieved when our sins are expiated or wiped away. This is the Sunday of the Golden Rose, on which the pope would take a golden rose and give it to a privileged monarch, who was favored by the pope. The rose is seen as a foretaste of the happiness of Heaven. #20150315
Septuagesima Sunday 2015 The Epistle tells us that if we are to put our efforts into anything it should be something that really matters. Not for the perishable rewards given in sports but for the eternal reward of Heaven. These three Sundays are for an examination of conscience. We should be asking during these days what we have done in our life that has truly mattered. It is not easy to be a Catholic, because it means we will have enemies in this life. The opinions of men do not affect our eternity. It does not matter how we begin our life, but how we end it. We must live with distrust of self and knowledge of our dependence on God. #20150201
Conference From First Friday November 2014 To teach, rule, and sanctify are the three powers priests must employ to accomplish their purpose on earth. Through preaching the priest shares the fruits of all he knows. In ruling the priest is able to organize society according to the principals of the Church. By sanctifying the priest makes the people truly holy. The priest is called “Father,” because he gives life by healing and restoring the faithful. The priest should offer all, especially the Mass, for the remission of sins. God chose men, not angels, to be priests, because men know sin and can offer compassion to their fellow sinners. But despite knowing sin, no one on earth has a greater obligation to perfection than the priest. Priests belong entirely to Christ and must possess His mind and will. #20141107
Sermon From The Feast Of Saints Peter & Paul 2014 The gates of hell will not prevail against the Church because Christ protects it and has built it on the rock of St. Peter. We know much about St. Peter from the Gospels and about St. Paul from the Acts and the Epistles. They mirrored Christ. St. Peter is highlighted by his conversion which drew Our Lord to his humility and sincerity. St. Peter as Vicar of Christ on earth is the the means of our relationship with God. Saints Peter and Paul are models of the priesthood and religious life. Vocations should be inspired by this feast to follow their example. St. Ignatius says that we should presume to be a priest unless told by competent guides that it is not for us. All are called to the priesthood and/or religious life. #20140629S
Sermon On The 4th Sunday after Easter 2014 First Communion Sunday – God loves us and desires to come to us in Holy Communion. The day of our First Holy Communion is remembered by all – even those who have left the Faith. We prepare ourselves for that most important day and believe every article of doctrine, not just in our head, but in our hearts. We belong to God alone when we receive Him. He makes a promise when He gives Himself to us in the Eucharist, a promise that He will take us to Heaven one day. #20140518
Sermon From The 2nd Sunday of Lent 2014 At the Transfiguration, Christ took three apostles that represent three virtues. St. Peter represents duty, St. James represents knowledge, and St. John represents love. It was as if Christ relaxed and allowed His Divinity to shine through His human nature. This was shown to the apostles and to us to save us from discouragement in suffering. We see the glory that is in store. It is an insight into Heaven. We should not be fooled by the world and its false promises but always remember that in our Communions we received the Source of all good. #20140316
