3rd Sunday after Epiphany 2018

This is the Third Sunday after the Epiphany and the theme of the season is still proclaimed: undying faith in the Son of God becoming Man.  St. Paul, whose feast this week celebrates his conversion, reminds us in the Epistle to be, as much as possible, at peace with all men.  In the Gospel Our Lord performs a miracle in curing the leper and then another miracle for the servant of the centurion.  This account again emphasizes the showing of His Divinity through His Humanity to the Jews in the leper and to the Gentiles in the servant of the pagan centurion.  We should take up the prayer of the soldier, especially at Holy Communion, and ask that our souls may be healed.  Then we can hear those beautiful words to the leper that made him clean of that terrible disease.

The Doctrine On Purgatory

All Souls Day 2017

Despite the tone of mourning and sorrow the Church has infused this Mass on All Souls Day with hope.  The reason for this is explained by the teachings of our Faith about Purgatory where those who have died as imperfect friends of God are purified of the obstacles that impede their entrance into heaven.  This devotion is ancient in the Church and in history and the liturgical expression of it is examined.  Finally, the saints are cited for their insights.

All Souls Day 2017

Pray for the faithful departed, especially those from this chapel.  We must appreciate how perfectly pure and reverent one needs to be in order to enter Gods presence.  Holy Souls are in peace and depend on the living to be purified.  Have mercy on them because the hand of the Lord has touched them.  Have Masses offered for them.  Our known vices must be eliminated now with merit or else they will be the cause of our punishment without merit.  A word to the wise is sufficient.

A Theme Of Perfection

Our Lord’s first public raising from the dead is the Gospel for today.  Moved at the sight of the widow of Naim, Christ miraculously brought her only child back to life with the words, “Young man, I say to thee arise”.  After explaining this story we begin a tour of the chapel which was inspired by the recent “open house”.  The chapel was designed to teach and to lead anyone who enters here to the heights of perfection in the spiritual life.  More beautiful lessons will be presented in future installments.

The Remains of Sin

All Souls Day 2015

Very few in our day remember the souls of the departed because of the false belief in the universal salvation of all men.  In assisting the suffering souls in Purgatory, we gain friends who will intercede for us.  We must never waste the time we have been given, because the way we choose to spend our moments on earth will make the difference between an eternity in Heaven or Hell.  Many souls can be released on this day, especially through the intercession of the Virgin Mary.  All our sins have a debt of punishment attached to them.  If we pray our penance well, we could remit our entire debt of temporal punishment, but if we die with these dispositions of soul, we would rather throw ourselves into the punishments of Purgatory than remain in the presence of the infinitely perfect God.

Her Sacrificial Heart

Feast of the Seven Sorrows 2015
The Epistle for this Mass makes reference to Judith of the Old Testament who was a type of the Blessed Virgin.  The seven swords depicted in the Immaculate Heart represent seven key moments of suffering in the life of our Holy Mother, however, her life was filled with many sorrows.  We have been given a privilege to live in times of great trials in the Church in which we may suffer for Our Lord.  Everything that Christ merited on the Cross He willed to share with His associate, His Virgin Mother.  Few remember that the basis of this feast is found in the Immaculate Conception, which prepared the Blessed Mother to be a pure victim.  Her suffering was made far greater because of her sensitivity of soul and her deep hatred of sin.  She has her Immaculate Heart in Heaven to this day so she might compassionate us in the sorrows of our life.

The Secret To Sanctity

When Our Lord raised the son of the widow of Naim to life, the miracle was instantaneous, with the child restored as if he were simply waking from sleep.  As Christians we know that all suffering is sent for a reason, and sometimes the greatest joys come from times of sorrow.

The Epistle for this Mass speaks about fraternal correction, a teaching so often misunderstood by Catholics.  Remember Our Lord describes himself as meek and humble of heart.  The virtue of meekness is related to clemency, which gives us the ability to forgive easily insults.  A man who is humble recognizes what he is of himself.  This is what made the saints lowly as the dust.  Pride is the most deceptive of all vices, even disguising itself as humility.  We should be well instructed about this vice so we may recognize it better and more effectively uproot it from our souls.

God Will Win

The 5th Sunday After Pentecost 2015
Fraternal charity is a theme of this Mass. Tomorrow is the feast of St. Peter and he is a great person who was trained well by Our Lord. A test of courage is the ability to endure challenges patiently. We should imitate the saints in seeking peace and pursuing it. Our love of God is seen in how much we love neighbor too. Our society is deteriorating and is seen in its acceptance of the four sins that cry out to God for vengeance. A heavy chastisement is awaiting us. The Sacred Heart lamented that even consecrated souls are guilty. By our baptisms all of us have been dedicated to the Blessed Trinity and should fulfill our vows of fidelity. God will triumph in the end with a victory as seen by Gideon.

Mercy And Humility

The mercy of God is a mystery like the Holy Eucharist.  We need mercy to be saved because of our sins and we need humility so we recognize our need and ask for divine help.  Instead of being humble like the dirt we are more like the devil in our pride and refusal to pray.  God blesses us with old age so we learn eventually that we are stupid and weak.  Slowly, in the face of death, we learn to beg for heavenly grace, forgiveness and aid in obtaining heaven.  From a battlefield hospital and from a death row cell we hear stories of how the power of prayer, especially to the Blessed Mother, can turn the unrepentant from damnation to salvation.
