In the Epistle for the Fourth Sunday after the Epiphany St. Paul teaches that charity must be part of the fulfillment of all the commandments and not a license to commit sin. We must do our part and fight against evil. We need to ask for forgiveness, renounce our sins and cry to Our Lord with the apostles “Save us, Lord!” #20190203K
The feast of the Purification also celebrates Our Lord’s Presentation in the Temple. The Mosaic law required a mother to offer sacrifices before she could be allowed again to participate in worship. In addition, it stipulated that a first born son should be offered to God Who would then return him to the parents for raising him. The Blessed Mother and her Divine Son were exempt from these requirements because of Their sinlessness and holiness but They showed us the way of humility today. We must imitate Them in offering ourselves to God. #20190202
3rd Sunday after Epiphany 2019 The Introit and some of the Mass propers for the Third Sunday after the Epiphany will be repeated on the next two Sundays. They renew the joy of the Incarnation and show forth the divinity of Our Lord. These are reminders of the essential quality of the liturgy in sanctifying our lives.  The Gospel in particular manifests Christ’s divine power, first to the Jews in the person of the leper and then to the Gentiles in the person of the centurion’s servant. St. Paul’s epistle stresses charity as the hallmark of Christians. #20190127M
Feast Of The Epiphany 2019 The feast of the Epiphany is the manifestation of God made Man and seen in the Holy Infant by the Magi. The Magi were Gentile wise men who were familiar with Hebrew prophecies & recognized in a miraculous star the fulfillment of them in the coming of the Messiah. They had the generosity to follow the star to Bethlehem & be the first non-Jews to see and to adore Jesus Christ. Each of us is called to follow our own star of attraction which will lead us to Our Lord if we, also, are generous. It is never too late to follow your star. #20190106
The Octave of the Nativity is an ancient feast with roots in pagan times. The Christians felt the need to gather on the first day of the new year to do penance for the pagan revelry of the previous night. This popular penitential devotion moved the Church authorities to institute this feast and thereby add a renewal of Christmas job along with a commemoration of the Circumcision and an honoring of the Blessed Virgin Mary who was the key to these mysteries. We should promise to take our Christian life seriously this year. The carol about the twelve days of Christmas was a catechism lesson for the persecuted Catholics in the past and full of beautiful truths during our days of celebrating the Nativity.
The Sunday during the Octave of Christmas is a renewal of the feast of the Nativity. We should feel the comfort of our Faith and disregard the propaganda of the media which has a particular animosity toward Our Lord and His Blessed Mother. The Gospel points out the first sorrow of Our Lady as prophesied by Simeon and that the Christ Child grew in wisdom, age and strength before God and men.
Christmas 2018 Midnight Christmas brings joy to all the people of the world despite any attempts to thwart it. So along with the sorrows around us nothing prevents God dwelling among us. We hope in God that He will save us and exercise His Kingship in a society devoted to His Royal and Davidic line. The Mass texts re-enforce this through their own prayerful considerations. #20181225
Gaudete Sunday 2018 The Third Sunday of Advent is called Gaudete Sunday because of the mitigated penance it communicates as we draw closer to Christ’s arrival. St. John the Baptist comes before us again in today’s Gospel as he heralds the Messiah and Christmas. He had great holiness and all the qualities necessary to prepare the people for the Redeemer’s arrival. The Epistle echoes the call of the Mass to let our joy touch others and lead them to God. Success in this regard depends on prayer with belief, confidence in petition, reliance on God and perseverance. With these our prayers bear fruit as does our upcoming celebration of Christmas. #20181216
2nd Sunday of Advent The Gospel for the Second Sunday of Advent needs explanation because, contrary to a superficial reading of the text, St. John is not doubting that Christ is the Messiah but St. John is directing his disciples away from himself and to the Savior. This Mass is one of sanctity and the importance of good will as we prepare for Christ’s coming at Christmas in our hearts. This week also has wonderful virgin-martyr saints that are models of imitation for us in their prayer life and the good instruction by their parents. #20181209S
