Pledge Your Loyalty

Holy Thursday 2019

St. Paul reminds us in the Epistle not to receive the Body of Christ unworthily.  It is a betrayal and a lie to use a sign of love as one of hatred the way Judas did with his kiss.  The Church interrupts her time of penance and sorrow to express her joy over the gifts of the Holy Eucharist, the Mass and sacred priesthood.  Christ thought these important enough to shed His Blood to give them to us.  We must love these precious treasures as much as possible and renew our love and dedication to them.

Triumph Tinged With Sorrow

The sacramental of the palm is a sign of victory and means of grace.  Use it and the liturgy to fight off the devil who tries to separate us from the Mass and its ministers.  Christ planned His triumphant procession into Jerusalem, the Holy City, to proclaim His Kingship clearly.  This was so evident that He was condemned later in the week for being the King of the Jews.  Today is the original feast of Christ the King but because of the note of sorrow the new feast was instituted.  The entire Holy Week is encapsulated in today’s Mass and ceremonies.

Live In A Spirit Of Prayer

Passion Sunday 2019
Passion Sunday begins an intensification of our Lenten penances with the veiling of the crucifix and statues which are spiritually encouraging to us. The key to this season is to strive to have the thoughts of Christ, especially those of His Passion. With this, prayer and hope we can rely on God and His promises.

Sacrament Of Life

Laetare Sunday 2019
After learning about the wonderful saints of this week, Francis of Paola, Isidore of Seville and Vincent Ferrer, the Epistle of St. Paul about the son of the slave girl and the heir of the free woman is explained.  Then the Gospel, which is the beginning of St. John’s famous sixth chapter about the Bread of Life, describes the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes by Our Lord and how His apostles shared in this miraculous power.  All this prefigures the Holy Eucharist and the power of transubstantiation which Christ would give to His priests.  Coming in the middle of Lent, this Sunday encourages us to persevere in our penances and to draw strength to do so from Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament.

Our Lady’s Fiat

Feast Of The Annunciation 2019
The Annunciation changed all of history as God became a Man this day.  The fall of Adam and Eve was repaired by the archangel, St. Gabriel, asking the New Eve to become the Mother of God.  Our Lady prophesied that all generations will call her blessed and we fulfill this prophecy with every Hail Mary.  We should say the Angelus with devotion.

Be Little And Be Saved

3rd Sunday in Lent 2019
St. Paul reminds us in the Epistle that we all have the vocation to be mystics and we become one either in this life or in Purgatory.  This Lent we can become saints if we renounce our pride in intelligence, talents and good looks.

Protector Of Holy Church

Feast Of St. Joseph 2019
The Gospel for this feast is taken from St. Matthew about the so-called doubt of St. Joseph.  These few verses contain a wealth of doctrinal information about his fatherly love of the Son of God, his pure love of his wife, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the unique holiness of St. Joseph.  Because of these prerogatives he is a wonderful intercessor for everyone and every need as attested by countless saints.  The litany of his praises is deservingly offered to him on his feast in gratitude for all he does for souls.

Be Hopeful

2nd Sunday in Lent
St. Paul is preaching to people of his time who were being dragged down by the pagans, mostly by sins of impurity.  In visions, the saints have seen children and young adults in Hell for sins of impurity so we must combat this.  The Transfiguration is when Christ allowed His divinity to shine forth through His humanity.  This was to strengthen the apostles for the trials ahead.  We take the same encouragement for the rest of Lent.

An Acceptable Time

1st Sunday In Lent 2019
St. Paul tells us in the Epistle that now is the acceptable time to grow close to Our Lord.  The Liturgy shows the way with a special Mass for each day of Lent.  Our battle begins against the devil and sin and a holy fear of our own weaknesses is a good trait in any soldier.  Christ leads us by entering into the desert, fasting and overcoming the temptations presented to Him.  Our help will come from Psalm 90 which is the prayer for confidence and from the angels who ministered to Our Lord and will do so for us in the days ahead.

Join In Penance

Ash Wednesday Evening 2019
Lent begins with the moving Epistle from the Prophet Joel which calls on all, especially the priests, to do penance for sin and thereby receive from God the blessings of His gifts.  Through prayer, fasting and almsgiving we separate ourselves from evil tendencies and open up to the infusion of God’s life.  The sacramental of the Ashes should be received with as much devotion, sorrow and love so to obtain the riches of grace being offered.
