Pentecost Sunday 2018 Before the Epistle and Gospel for the feast of Pentecost we hear about St. Gregory VII and St. Philip Neri. After nine days of prayer from the Ascension the birthday of the Church took place with the coming of the Holy Ghost. The Person of Love completed the preparation of the apostles for their mission to convert the world to the one Faith and worship through the many charisms including the preaching which enabled all to understand their speech. O Holy Spirit, Soul of my soul, strengthen me, console me. Amen.
On Pentecost Sunday the Holy Ghost manifested Himself under the two visible signs of wind and fire. The wind stirred the pilgrims who were in the city for the Jewish feastday and drove them to the Upper Room where they heard the Apostles speaking in all their languages of the wonderful works of God. The Apostles were able to do this after the Holy Ghost had appeared to them in parted tongues of fire and rested upon each of them. This visible theophany marked the beginning of the sanctification of the world which the Holy Ghost will accomplish until the end of time.
This sermon focuses on why we need the Holy Spirit in our times. The term Pentecost means 50 days (after Our Lord’s Passion, Death and Resurrection) and on this day the Holy Spirit descended upon Blessed Mother and the Apostles. This action of the Holy Spirit transformed them into veritable spiritual warriors for the Faith and enabled them to carry out the most important commandment – to go out into the world, preach the gospel and baptize in the name the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It is the also the birthday of the Church, meaning that the Church became visible to the world on that day and its missionary activity began in earnest. Unlike the modernist view of the world today, the apostles knew that missionary activity was, indeed, necessary to accomplish their mission. Fr. Superior gives many examples of how this has been done throughout church history and credits those who, though relatively few in number today, continue this great work of salvation.
Pentecost Sunday 2015 We must remember to pray for the fallen soldiers on Memorial Day. We are not bound to love our government, but, in the virtue of patriotism, we are bound to love the country that supports us and the people who live in it. A good Catholic soldier endures hardships and makes reparations for the sins of his fellow countrymen. After the Ascension of Our Lord, the Apostles spent nine days in prayer. These days are duplicated in every soul purified in the last stages of perfection. The Apostles were deprived of the sensible consolations of the Savior so that they would be purified of all attachments, even misplaced attachments in the spiritual life. We are given gifts from God that we may love Him more. #20150524
Sunday after Ascension 2015 We are given great comfort from the Introit of this Mass, “the Lord is my life and my salvation, whom shall I fear?” We know that everything that happens to us was all part of God’s plan. Our Lord is no longer present on Earth in the same way He was before the Ascension. Although the Apostles felt desolate when Christ left them, they remained in constant prayer. St. Peter tells us not only to be prudent and watchful, but to show constant charity towards our neighbor. It is the practice of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy which has won innumerable converts. #20150517K
Sermon On Pentecost Sunday 2014 The Father is the Unbegotten, the Son is the Only-begotten, and the Holy Ghost is the unifying and personal Love which unites both the Father and the Son. The Holy Spirit is called the Spirit of Unction, the Finger of the Right Hand of God, and the Giver of Life. Today is the birthday of the Church and we see all of Christianity spring from the graces the Holy Ghost gives to the Church. There is one Faith and there is one Lord. #20140608
Pentecost Sunday 2013 Father begins by explaining the beauty and meaning of the Pentecost vestments that were given to him on his anniversary of ordination. The sermon continues in describing that today begins the visible reign of the Holy Ghost Who is called the forgotten Person of Love. Pentecost and its octave close out the Paschal season and the connection between this feast and our redemption is a summary of this liturgical part of the year. We are in much need for the coming of the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity into our spiritual life as was the case for the Apostles. These loyal disciples of Our Lord were profoundly changed by the coming of the Paraclete and so are we. #20130519
Pentecost Sunday 2012 With the celebration of Memorial Day, we should always remember that the soldiers who have served our country, both living and dead, are in need of our prayers. Apart from the discussion of the politics and morality of war, these people who have suffered and died for us deserve our spiritual help.
Our Lord’s visible reign on Earth ended on the feast of the Ascension and on that day, Heaven became our home. All the joys and pleasures of this world are as shadows compared to the happiness of Heaven. The Holy Ghost was sent to mankind so that the presence of God would not be limited to the physical presence of Christ on Earth, but that it might be spread throughout the entire world. There is a childhood, adolescence, and adulthood in the spiritual life which mirrors that of our natural development. The Apostles passed through these stages as we all must, and their development reached its final stage on this day. From that moment on, the Apostles were confirmed in grace and preserved from committing any grave sin. #20120527
