Be Little And Be Saved

3rd Sunday in Lent 2019
St. Paul reminds us in the Epistle that we all have the vocation to be mystics and we become one either in this life or in Purgatory.  This Lent we can become saints if we renounce our pride in intelligence, talents and good looks.

Be Hopeful

2nd Sunday in Lent
St. Paul is preaching to people of his time who were being dragged down by the pagans, mostly by sins of impurity.  In visions, the saints have seen children and young adults in Hell for sins of impurity so we must combat this.  The Transfiguration is when Christ allowed His divinity to shine forth through His humanity.  This was to strengthen the apostles for the trials ahead.  We take the same encouragement for the rest of Lent.

Conversion

Septuagesima Sunday 2019
Septuagesima Sunday starts the new Paschal cycle and serves as a time of examining our consciences in preparation for Lent.  The Mass texts, especially the Introit, teach us about death being the consequence of original sin.  The Epistle encourages us to be as generous as the pagans are in obtaining their perishable rewards whereas we strive for imperishable ones in heaven.  The capital sins and their consequences are examined before the Gospel reminds us that the last shall be first and that many are called but few are chosen.

Herald Of Christmas

Gaudete Sunday 2018
The Third Sunday of Advent is called Gaudete Sunday because of the mitigated penance it communicates as we draw closer to Christ’s arrival.  St. John the Baptist comes before us again in today’s Gospel as he heralds the Messiah and Christmas.  He had great holiness and all the qualities necessary to prepare the people for the Redeemer’s arrival.  The Epistle echoes the call of the Mass to let our joy touch others and lead them to God.  Success in this regard depends on prayer with belief, confidence in petition, reliance on God and perseverance.  With these our prayers bear fruit as does our upcoming celebration of Christmas.

First Sunday of Advent 2018
The First Sunday of Advent begins the Church’s new liturgical year and reminds us that the way we pray is the way we believe.  The liturgy is the official prayer of the Church and the ordinary means of holiness.  It is also a weapon against the devil.  Prayer is an excellent penitential practice for Advent and the Blessed Mother is the perfect model of this practice.  Our Lady will prepare us for Christmas through her Rosary devoutly recited.

End Of The Year Warning

Last Sunday after Pentecost 2018
The Last Sunday after Pentecost is a reminder not to be a lover of this world nor compromise with it.  The Gospel gives signs of the last days which are meant to warn us.  Also, the importance of sacramentals, especially the Rosary and the Miraculous Medals, is explained because of the feast of St. Catherine Laboure this week.

Consolation At The Time Of Death

Funeral Mass October 12, 2018

At this funeral Mass we are reminded about the importance of praying for the dead.  We must die because of Adam’s sin which we inherit and we must free ourselves from the guilt and punishment of our own actual sins.  Christ has given us the Sacrament of Penance to remove guilt but we may depart this life still with a debt to be paid and that is accomplished in Purgatory.  Now our work begins by praying for the departed.  These truths are a blessing to Catholics who know from them what to do when death claims one of our loved ones.  The Sacrament of Extreme Unction has been given by Our Lord just for the moment of death and the Church provides the Apostolic Blessing to give us added encouragement at this critical time.

Do Not Be Paralyzed By Sin

18th Sunday after Pentecost 2018
St. Paul’s Epistle for the Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost tells us the importance of the grace of God which the Holy Ghost gives us many times each day.  We should never neglect these daily opportunities and we should use them to fight off the devil and his temptations.  We should not let sin paralyze us.  The Gospel is a beautiful account which shows the authentic mercy of God.  We should ask our angels to help us pray and repent.

Draw Us To Yourself

Exaltation of the Holy Cross 2018
The feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a renewal of Good Friday but with the emphasis on the glorifying of the instrument of our salvation. From His Holy Cross, He calls to us and draws us to Himself.  At this Mass we are meant to respond generously to this invitation and become as Tertullian described the early Christians “Cross Lovers”.  The Cross was the means by which the Church was delivered from three centuries of persecution when Constantine triumphed by it.  His mother, St. Helen, shortly after discovered the true Cross.  Centuries later the emperor restored the Cross to its basilica in Jerusalem.  All these events are remembered today and encourage us to remain faithful.
