God Will Hear Us

Ash Wednesday 2018
In 1741 the pope declared that Lent is the true sign of the Christian fighting for his salvation by means of penance through fasting which is understood by the receiving of the sacramental of ashes today.  The entire Septuagesima season focused our attention on sin and our identifying the predominant fault we want to eradicate now.  We begin our forty days of prayers, almsgiving and fasting with confidence that God will hear our plea and forgive us as He did with the Ninivites at the preaching of the prophet Jonas.

Compassionate Mother

Friday in Passion Week 2017 – 1st Friday

The prophecy of Caiphas about the necessity of Christ’s death for the people is an example of how God’s word can even come from the mouth of His enemy.  However, the Friday in Passion Week is especially dedicated to our Mother of Sorrows.  Our Lady stood by the Cross of her Son and suffered with Him.  The Blessed Mother is the example for true friends of Our Savior and she will make them be like her and her Son.

It’s Personal

Passion Sunday 2017

Towards the end of Our Lord’s life the hostility of His adversaries intensified.  The religious leaders refused, despite enormous evidence in the miracles and teachings of Christ, to accept Him as their Savior. Before He humbly accepted the incredible sufferings of His Passion and Death for our sins and the sins of the entire world, He wanted His enemies to know clearly what they were in the eyes of God when He said instead of loving Him they wanted to kill Him and they were not “of God.”  This was a powerful  indictment pronounced by the Son of God. The veiling of statues during Passiontide is the reminder that Jesus had to hide Himself from them until the hour of His sacrifice had come.

We Are Children Of The Promise

Laetare Sunday 2017

We have reached the middle of Lent and we rejoice at this point and continue to persevere. We receive graces as the chosen ones and we must not postpone our conversion. As the people in today’s Gospel, we will follow Our Lord for the beautiful teachings He gives us and for the miracle of the loaves and fishes.

Our Last Lent?

Third Sunday in Lent 2017

Lent provides us with additional aids in growing in sanctity and it is wise to take advantage of these as if this is our last opportunity to do so.  Every Mass in Lent has its own texts which should be read and prayed over, if not able to attend Mass daily.  So many lessons are available for those who are generous.

Pray With All Of Your Heart

Second Sunday in Lent 2017

The Transfiguration of Our Lord showed Him in all His Glory and it was an event that at first frightened the apostles, then reassured them in the Faith.  The Voice from Heaven, “This is My Beloved Son, hear ye Him,” shook the apostles to their very core.  We must realize that we ourselves will be transfigured and that our bodies will be glorified if we persevere in the Faith and have the humility necessary to enter Our Lord’s Kingdom after our physical death on this earth.  Peter, James and John were selected to give us a glimpse of what awaits us if we are faithful and have the humility to accept whatever Judgment is conferred on us when we ourselves meet Our Lord in His Glory.

Affixed To The Cross

First Sunday in Lent 2017

After a brief instruction about liturgical and sacred art this sermon tells about the importance of the sacramental of ashes.  Stations of the Cross is a Lenten practice beloved by the faithful because our Blessed Mother began the devotion.  Catholics must imitate the way of the Cross so they may be joined to Our Lord on it.  Finally, the temptations of Christ are explained.

Almsgiving

Friday After Ash Wednesday 2017 (First Friday)

The stational churches in Lent are important and the term has its origin in the Roman legion.  Today’s stational church has been matched with the texts of this Mass to teach us the importance of one of the three main Lenten penances: almsgiving.  This practice is ancient but misunderstood as to its nature, its proper motivation and correct manner of exercise.

Lent Comes From The Heart of God

Ash Wednesday Evening 2017

Our sins have caused the death of God on the cross and from the Sacred Heart comes the means of repairing this.  Ash Wednesday is the call to conversion and the ashes we receive remind us of our own death and that this may be our last opportunity to change.  Pope Pius X said Ignorance is the greatest of our time for Catholics so study of the Faith during Lent is an important penance.

The Meanings of Penance

Ash Wednesday 2017

Ash Wednesday begins the forty days of Lenten practice.  Penance is the virtue which motivates the faithful to receive the same named sacrament and do the works of that virtue, namely prayer, fasting & almsgiving.  The sacramental of the ashes gives the strength to do this.  Also in this sermon, we are given suggested ways of practicing Lenten penances.
