Laetare Sunday – 4th Sunday In Lent 2021
The Gospel today tells about the multiplication of the loaves and fishes by Our Lord about a year before His Passion and Death. This miracle was a preparation for the first Mass and the institution of the Holy Eucharist on Holy Thursday. The happiness that we receive from the Blessed Sacrament is what gives joy to this Sunday in the middle of Lent and is expressed in the liturgy by the beautiful rose color of the vestments today. In addition, a golden rose was customarily blessed on this day, used to decorate the altar and then given to a Catholic monarch who assisted at the Mass. The sacredness of the Holy Eucharist demands reverence in its administration as St. Thomas Aquinas said centuries ago.

Lent has a special Mass for each day and a church in Rome for its celebration. The catechumens and penitents were instructed on the faith and penance. The texts chosen taught how the Old Testament pointed the way to the Messiah and His upcoming sacrifice on the Cross. They also encouraged them to seek forgiveness for their sins from a most merciful God who only wishes good for us.

Today marks a step closer to the Sacred Priesthood as our brother officially becomes a member of our community with his profession. Religious life is a secure path to holiness and happiness in this life which will blossom in heaven. In recalling the first stirrings of a vocation one can see Our Lord gently calling to follow Him in His life of suffering for others. Sacrifices and greater challenges are still in the future as Christ molds one into a perfect image of Himself on the Cross. By a generous and humble acceptance of this will lead to our sharing in the glory of Our Lord.

This is indeed a Sunday to rejoice because it is the first High Mass of our newly ordained priest. Father was ordained on the feast of Our Lady’s Presentation in a ceremony which showed the sacredness of this sacrament of Holy Orders. Ordination imprints on the soul of the new priest a permanent mark called a character. The character can never be removed and joins the ordinand to the Sacred Humanity of Jesus in such a sublime way that the priest is another Christ. Our Lord now acts directly through His priest to the degree that the words of consecration, This is My Body, are spoken by Christ Himself through the instrumentality of the celebrant. We have much to be thankful for today that another “alter Christus” will offer the most august sacrifice of the Holy Mass.

After the Epistle and Gospel, Father spoke about the care he received the last few weeks and his attendance at Mass and how much it is centered on God. Then he spoke about today’s feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori who is the patron of moral theologians and who propagated the system of probabilism through his newly founded congregation and its priest members. St. Alphonsus’ father opposed his vocation to the priesthood until he heard his son’s first sermon and then he approached him in sorrow and repentance for causing him difficulty in pursuing it. St. Alphonsus wrote many devotional works, was the instrument of miracles and the example for other saints like St. Gerard Majella.

After hearing about Saints John Gualbert, Veronica, Bonaventure, Henry, the Carmelite Sisters of Compiegne and Camillus we had a renewal of the Paschal sacraments of Baptism and Holy Eucharist in the Epistle and Gospel. The Divine Office recounts the story of King David and how his sloth led to sins of adultery and murder. His meekness saved him when his crimes were exposed by the prophet Nathan. We should imitate his repentance and reject the devil and all his works. Receiving Our Lord in Holy Communion faithfully will lead us to union and heaven one day.

We must be thankful for the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist and be humbled in its presence. During our long journey to Heaven we must constantly practice docility to God and He will reward us. Christ revealed what we all acknowledge and believe as the essence of the doctrine, namely transubstantiation. Whenever we receive we are close to Heaven and our path there is secure. Those endanger themselves needlessly when they neglect this great sacrament. We are united in the Holy Eucharist through Our Lord’s Real Presence and are so inspired as to make the texts of this Mass, which were composed by St. Thomas, our source of contemplation. The rites of the Mass re-enact the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord.
