Much Is Forgiven Those Who Love

Sermon From The
9th Sunday After Pentecost 2013 – 10am Mass
Tomorrow is the feast of the great penitent, St. Mary Magdalen.  Early in life she fell into sin which made her like Satan.  However, Our Lord’s love frees us from sin.  Some, like the Pharisees, rejected His love.  Even mortal sins can be forgiven by a perfect act of contrition.  The Blessed Mother will help us as St. Mary Magdalen discovered.  Christ praised our saint for choosing the better way in contemplation and giving all as shown by her anointing Him with oil.  After the Epistle and Gospel follows an instruction on the priesthood and religious life which stresses the importance of zeal for the commandments as expressed through the vows so thereby we lay up treasures in heaven.

Why God Permits Suffering

Today is also Father’s Day.  This vocation is attacked in our society and only adds to the suffering and sacrifices that fathers must endure for the sake of their families but God always hears their prayers and heaven awaits them.  The Black Forest fires that have been destroying many homes in our area have even threatened us but God has preserved us.  We have many spiritual helps to protect us and all are welcome here in case of danger.  Things like this make people wonder how evils exist in a world created by our heavenly Father Who saw that all was good.  Non-Catholics are at a loss to answer such questions and some conclude that God cannot exist.  We know that there are many reasons why we suffer and imitating Our Lord on the cross and winning eternal glory is certainly one of them.

We Proclaim the Dogma

Trinity Sunday 2013
The world is fraught with temptations which undermine vocations of young men and women.  The result is that there are very few good vocations today.  Through the intercession of St. Rita, the patron saint of impossible causes, our community was granted priestly vocations.

The most solemn dogma of the Trinity is proclaimed by the Church on this day.  Although we can reason to the existence of a single Creator, we cannot reason to the existence of three Persons in that one God.  We believe in the Trinity because it was God who revealed this truth to us.  Constant reference is made to the Holy Trinity throughout the Mass, and it is in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost that we are baptized.  We testify and proclaim without ambiguity that this dogma is true, and we dedicate ourselves to the honor of our Triune God.

Our Struggle for an Everlasting Crown

4th Sunday after Easter 2013
The prayers composed by the Church express the intentions for which God wishes us to pray.  In today’s Collect we pray that our hearts may remain forever set on that place where true joys reside.  The angels and saints in Heaven, because of their complete conformity to God’s Will, never resist His desires.  We pray that mankind may submit itself to God in the same way on Earth.  We have the potential, when in the state of grace, to allow God to operate through us.  It is only because of the obstacles we place in God’s way that we do not see that operation in our lives.  Holy Scripture warns us about the heavy consequences of the rejection of Christ by the worldly.  Temptations are a normal struggle for all, but the struggle is nothing in comparison to the reward in store for those who remain faithful.

The Life-giving Sign

Sermon From
3rd Sunday of Lent 2013
Our faith in the Blessed Trinity and in our Redemption are expressed by making the Sign of the Cross.  This simple act can win innumerable graces for us, and stir up in our souls sentiments of faith, hope, and charity.  When we remember how much Our Lord has suffered for us, we should be inspired to suffer for Him.  We see how valuable our soul is in the eyes of our Creator, Who went to such lengths to save us.  The early Fathers of the Church offer numerous references to the Sign of the Cross being made by Christians, and they describe the deep meaning contained in the ancient gesture.

The devil attempts to impede our spiritual progress by distractions and temptations, but our rule of life is to do the Will of God.  We should never imagine that we are safe from demonic attacks.

Make Us Worthy to Praise Her

Immaculate Conception Of The Blessed Virgin Mary 2012

The Blessed Virgin Mary dispenses the benefits of the Redemption to each of us.  She is always there, watching over us.  God, Who destined the Virgin Mary to be His Mother on Earth, deemed it unfitting that one who was called to such a great and noble vocation be in even the least way imperfect.  Her redemption was anticipatory and preservative, in view of the merits won on Calvary.  This feast is not only meant to honor our Mother in Heaven but to teach us about Sanctifying Grace, the greatest of God’s gifts to us in this life.  We are the continual objects of the devil’s attacks because of his hatred for this wonderful gift we have been given.  The Immaculate Conception made Our Lady the perfect mother to us, and the refuge of all sinners.

The One Most Like God

Feast of Saint Michael 2012
This feast has been celebrated for nearly 1,500 years.  The existence of angels, or some form of spiritual guardian, has been affirmed by people of every culture and religion.  We have not only been told about their existence through Divine Revelation, but God has allowed them to visit us innumerable times throughout history.  The angels are quasi-infinite in number, because each of them was made to reflect a perfection of God.  We will never appreciate all our guardian angels have done for us.  We give our good angels great joy when we are virtuous, and we give them great power to aid us when we invoke their help.  St. Michael was chosen as God’s great defender, not because he was the most powerful, but because he was most Godlike in his love.

Paying the Price of Sin

12th Sunday After Pentecost 2012
The Epistle tells us that “the letter kills, and the spirit gives life,” which reiterates the fact that the Old Law has been fulfilled in Christ.

It is of the utmost importance for the youth to pray that God guides them to their true vocation in life.  The Church teaches us that the primary purpose of the married state is for the couple to aid the children God sends them in their journey back to God.  The pure love shared among the members of the Holy Family should be our model.

The man found half dead in this Gospel account represents us and the wounds we bear on our souls due to sin.  The Samaritan who saved the life of his enemy represents Our Lord Who saves the souls of sinners.

The Slavery of Impurity

8th Sunday after Pentecost 2012
When devout Catholics hear about a tragedy on the news, they should feel the obligation to pray for the bodily and spiritual well-being of those affected.  It is not for us to question the will of God.  What we are to suffer and when we are to die is all according to His providence.

St. Paul instructs us to avoid being debtors and slaves to the flesh.  The Gospel does not commend the evil acts of the unjust steward, but his forethought and clever prudence in achieving his goals.  This was the secret of the saints, who were solicitous in achieving their ultimate goal in Heaven.  There are countless stories of those who have given themselves over to the slavery of sin, especially sins of impurity, which should serve as a dire warning to us all.

A Vision of Hell

Passion Sunday 2012

The liturgical year reflects the life of Christ, and we now reach the fruition of His earthly life with the approach of Holy Week.  All the images are veiled to remove all consolations so that we may better unite with the desolation Christ endured in those moments.  The great mystic, Josefa Menéndez, received visions of Purgatory and Hell.  Our Lord spoke of these punishments of the next life very often.  Sister Josefa frequently spoke of the inability of the lost souls to love, and that if even the slightest act of love were permitted it would no longer be Hell.  She saw that a soul which had gone to great lengths to deprive and mortify itself on Earth would not endure the sufferings of Hell.  We should have an undying fear of this eternal punishment, practice the virtue of hope, and respond to the continual graces God offers.
