Our Lord’s Final Gift

Sunday After The Ascension 2013
When St. Peter says that “charity covers a multitude of sins” he does not refer to the expressions of human affection, but rather the infused virtue which abides in our souls as the first consequence of a share in God’s life.  Charity is superior to all the other virtues because it gives us the ability to love God with the love He has for Himself and it unites us to God in His very essence.  Even the smallest acts are worthy of a great reward if they are performed with charity.

On Mothers’ Day we pray for all mothers, both living and dead, but we especially honor the Blessed Mother, who was given to us from the Cross.  She was the last gift that Christ gave His followers before the Redemption.  Devotion and veneration of Our Lady was practiced from the earliest days of the Church.  She was united with her Divine Son in His death.  Although she brought forth her Son without pain on Christmas, she participated so intimately in that act of Redemption which merited divine life for us, that it can truly be said that she brought us forth spiritually with great anguish.  It is impossible to find the Son without the Mother.

A Glimpse of the Divine

Sermon From The
2nd Sunday in Lent 2013
Today the faithful gather at the stational church of the Blessed Mother, so that we might be encouraged by the liturgy.  If we are being attacked, that means we are on the right path.  These three Apostles were chosen to glimpse the Divine because they were to witness the sufferings of Christ in Gethsemane.  God desires our sanctification, but we must avoid the vice of impurity which captures more souls than any other.  We must take this lessen to heart if we wish one day to see the triumph prefigured by the Transfiguration.

The Edifice and the Rock

Feast of Saints Peter and Paul 2012
Today the Church focuses particularly on St. Peter.  He was a simple fisherman, yet he was chosen to lead the Church.  We should desire to imitate the great love and docility that St. Peter showed throughout his life.  We observe the flaws of his nature in the Gospel.  However, we also see that, by the hand of God, a supernatural edifice was built on that natural foundation, just as the Church was built on this rock.  This great saint instructs us in the lesson he was taught by Christ – to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God.  He had such trust in Our Lord that during his imprisonment and in the face of his execution, he slept soundly in his cell.  This is the feast which reminds us that we too must possess undying trust and hope in the providence of God.
