Octave of the Nativity 2019
The Octave of the Nativity is an ancient feast with roots in pagan times. The Christians felt the need to gather on the first day of the new year to do penance for the pagan revelry of the previous night. This popular penitential devotion moved the Church authorities to institute this feast and thereby add a renewal of Christmas job along with a commemoration of the Circumcision and an honoring of the Blessed Virgin Mary who was the key to these mysteries. We should promise to take our Christian life seriously this year. The carol about the twelve days of Christmas was a catechism lesson for the persecuted Catholics in the past and full of beautiful truths during our days of celebrating the Nativity.

Christmas brings joy to all the people of the world despite any attempts to thwart it. So along with the sorrows around us nothing prevents God dwelling among us. We hope in God that He will save us and exercise His Kingship in a society devoted to His Royal and Davidic line. The Mass texts re-enforce this through their own prayerful considerations.

The Proclamation of the dogma of today’s feast of the Immaculate Conception was done by Pope Pius IX in 1854. This prerogative is an absolutely supernatural gift to the Blessed Virgin Mary in light of the Passion and Death of her Divine Son and which created Her as a worthy vessel for the carrying of Christ as His Mother later in Her life. Her initial plenitude of grace was accompanied by the virtues and the gifts in the highest degree possible to equip her for God’s mission. God’s love produced this in her and the Blessed Mother reciprocated this love throughout her life.

All Souls Day 2018
We are called on All Souls Day to be like the religious Sisters of the Society of the Helpers of the Holy Souls by praying and sacrificing for the relief and release of those detained in Purgatory. A member of this congregation, Mother St. Austin, wrote much about the purgatorial life and those who live it. In excerpts from her poetry we learn about God’s great love of the souls of the Church Suffering and how He embraces them and brings them to heaven once they have been perfected through their time of purification. St. Mary Magdalen is their patroness because she is the example for us of how the sins of a lifetime can be expiated as she accomplished it in three hours at the foot of the Cross.
