The angels were created before all material creation, and they are one of the chief creatures of God.  Hell was created first for the fallen angels, not for men.  We should ask our guarding angels to help us pray and to soften the hearts of our enemies.  St. Michael is mentioned in the Old and New Testament, as well as in oral tradition.  “Whoever humbles himself will be greatest in the kingdom of Heaven.”  We must call on St. Michael to make us humble.  Despite the desperate struggle of our times, St. Michael gives us confidence in our triumph.

Gratitude: The Unknown Virtue

With the approach of the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows we are reminded of Christ’s final gift to us from the Cross.  As we prepare to resume catechism classes it is important for parents to realize their serious obligation to train their children for heaven.  Our Lady’s 30 days are ending soon so we need fervor this week.  In the Gospel we learn the power of faith in the healing of the lepers but it is supernatural faith which is a theological virtue and can only be given by God.  Christ also teaches us about a part of the virtue of justice which few appreciate and even less practice and that is being thankful to God for the favors He grants us and showing gratitude to others for their kindness and charity towards us.

The New Law Changed Everything

The feast of Pope St. Pius X is this week and even he acknowledged that all his efforts had only delayed the enemies of the Church.  The Epistle summarizes the importance of recognizing the difference between the spirit of the law and its letter.  In the Gospel Our Lord teaches how the new law of love is extends to our neighbors too, even those we may not like.  Say the Act of Charity in the morning and practice it throughout the day by caring for someone else even if you do not feel like it because we do it for the love of God and it is the right thing to do.

Our Humiliations

This week we have the feasts of St. Helen and St. Bernard who entered religious life with thirty relatives and friends who accompanied him.  This is the Sunday of Humility when we remember where we came from so we do not fall.  St. Paul reminds Corinthians of their stupidity in worshiping rocks and how grace helped them.  We were called to a supernatural destiny from the beginning but Adam destroyed that for us.  Now we must overcome the inherited pride by the essential virtue of humility because unless we become like little children we shall not enter into heaven.

This week has the beautiful feasts of St. Dominic, Our Lady of the Snows, the Transfiguration and St. John Vianney.  Man by nature has the need to be religious and bind himself to that which is greater, namely God the Creator.  For Catholics this is enhanced as we are bound to God our Father.  For these reasons, and because of God’s own commandment, we must worship Him publicly and should not permit anything to prevent us from attending Mass on Sundays and Holydays of obligation.  Real men sacrifice all for family, and are willing to do the same for Almighty God.  St. Augustine said it famously, “Lord, you have made us for Yourself and our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee.”

Our Savior, in taking a human nature, knows by experience the hearts of men.  The Old Law was imperfect because it was given to an imperfect people but God was eager to give the fulfillment of that Law in a new and perfect Law.  The main difference between the Old and New Covenant is the spirit of inclusion in the latter, through fraternal charity.  This charity comes from God Himself.  We must do good to those who persecute us and leave vengeance to God alone.

Our Mediator To God

The gates of hell will not prevail against the Church because Christ protects it and has built it on the rock of St. Peter.  We know much about St. Peter from the Gospels and about St. Paul from the Acts and the Epistles.  They mirrored Christ.  St. Peter is highlighted by his conversion which drew Our Lord to his humility and sincerity.  St. Peter as Vicar of Christ on earth is the the means of our relationship with God.  Saints Peter and Paul are models of the priesthood and religious life.  Vocations should be inspired by this feast to follow their example.  St. Ignatius says that we should presume to be a priest unless told by competent guides that it is not for us.  All are called to the priesthood and/or religious life.

Definition Of Priestly Life

The priesthood was established with Christ’s words, “do this in memory of Me.”  The entire purpose of the priesthood is for the worship of God, through the Holy Eucharist.  This great gift of the Blessed Sacrament is envied by many who are outside the Church.  Catholics stand up in defense of the Eucharist because we know it is the true presence of God, and not simply symbolic.  It is a living memorial of the sacrifice of Christ on the cross.  We do not believe in the trans-signification of the modernists, but the dogma of transubstantiation.

The Summary of Holy Week

In the liturgy of Palm Sunday we are shown by Holy Mother Church the summary of the entire Holy Week.  Christ allowed Himself to be given regal praise this day, and we continue that celebration in the blessing and distribution of palms, which are a sign of victory.  The ancient practice of the Church in Jerusalem is repeated now in the triumphant procession.  Heaven is our goal, and we are called to follow Our Lord in all humility, so that we may have a part in that final procession when the souls of the just join their heavenly King.

Her Infallible Trust

What a close friend of God St. Gabriel must be for him to be chosen over all the other angels to ask God’s intended spouse, Our Lady, if she would be mother to the Divine Son.  If we want to know the will of God we should ask the angels, especially St. Gabriel.  When we hear the angel say, “Nothing shall be impossible with God,” it should fill us with hope and courage.  We must never give up!  Even Judas could have been saved if he had not despaired.  The Blessed Mother gives us the perfect example of infallible trust in God.
