Simplicity and the Holy Rosary

Great merit may be achieved in this life, not necessarily based on how notable the acts performed are in themselves, but due to the state of soul of the one who performs them.  One must be childlike in his soul – humble, trusting, obedient, loving, and simple.  Simplicity is one of the characteristics of the saints.  They did not over analyze every aspect of their relationship with God or project their desires and aspirations onto Him.  Our ideas of Who God is and what sanctity consists of must be given up when they act as an obstacle to true union.  True spiritual life requires a renunciation of our own opinions, everything else must be rooted in the Holy Scripture and doctrine.

The Holy Rosary should be carried by every Catholic and prayed daily.  It is the true sign, in the eyes of the world, of a Catholic.  The Blessed Mother asks that we perform our daily duties, accept our crosses with alacrity, and pray the Rosary, which unites us to the liturgy.

Obedient Unto Death

We should study and meditate on the cross of Our Lord, because it was on this cross that His greatest work was accomplished.  While the Son of God was suspended on the cross, He was thinking of each of us.  This device used for torture and execution has become our symbol of consolation and hope.  It was under this sign that Emperor Constantine conquered, and it was St. Helena, his mother, who led the expedition to recover the True Cross from the Holy Land.  We should not be fearful and reluctant in the face of the trials Our Lord sends us.  If we embrace these crosses, then we too will be obedient to the Will of God even unto death.

God’s Gratuitous Gifts

If we wish to know how we are to live our lives, we need only study the Holy Liturgy.  So often when we read the Gospels it is as if we are being instructed on a certain topic for the very first time.  Today’s Collect tells us that we should cry out to God in our helplessness.  Unfortunately, too few of us appreciate how helpless we really are.  We cannot do anything in our natural state to obtain our ultimate goal of Heaven.  We all bear one another’s burdens.  Not only do we suffer because of the sins of others, but we benefit from the merits of the saints.  We are called to live a holy life so that we may save our own souls and those of our neighbors.

The Honor of Our People

The Feast Of The Assumption 2012
At the moment of the Blessed Mother’s visitation, when St. John the Baptist leapt in the womb of Elizabeth, Our Lord was only three days old in the womb of the Virgin Mary. This is a biblical condemnation of the modern belief that the life of the child only begins after birth – an argument used to excuse the murder of the unborn.

The Blessed Mother did not carry herself to Heaven by her own power, she was assumed, body and soul, by the power of Almighty God. She was raised to the highest position in Heaven, second to the Holy Trinity, because of the degree of divine life she possessed. Sanctifying grace makes us lovable in the eyes of God, and it is the greatest of God’s gifts. The first fruit of Sanctifying Grace is sublime and supernatural divine love. We are not meant for this life. There is a place destined for us where there is no more sorrow or fear, and the Assumption of the Blessed Mother is the promise that one day we might enjoy it.

Stand Fast

Honor should be given to a priest, not because of who he is in himself, but because of the character he possesses through the sacrament of Holy Orders.

When reading the words of St. Paul’s Epistle we have hope for our enemies.  St. Paul persecuted the Church of Christ, but by God’s grace he was converted.  We must pray for those who persecute the Church of Christ today and do what we can to make up for the blasphemies and insults that the Blessed Mother and Our Lord endure.  No matter how bad the crisis in the Church and society appear to be, we are assured that God will triumph in the end.  The victory will come, and we will be filled with joy and thanksgiving, but only if we remain faithful.

The Sacrament of Holy Orders provides an increase of Sanctifying Grace as well as a special sacramental grace which aids the priest to live according to the dignity of his vocation.

The words of the liturgy chosen by the Church always perfectly reflect the intention we should possess for each day of the year.  As viatores, or wayfarers on the road to Heaven, Our Lord gives us constant assistance to bring us to our destination.  After a child receives baptism, he has all the infused virtues with the grace given to his soul.  However, if we do not put the virtues and gifts we have received into practice, they will remain forever dormant within us.  The Gospel instructs us in the importance of examining our conscience.  Our Lord desires us to practice the external good works of the pharisee while maintaining the humility of the publican.

The Blood of the Lamb

Feast Of The Precious Blood 2012

Pope Pius IX extended this feast to the entire Church in gratitude to Our Lord’s granting victory over His enemies.  The Gospel for today was written by St. John, the only Apostle to witness the last moments of Our Lord’s earthly life.  After the side of Christ was pierced on the Cross, copious amounts of Blood and water flowed forth.  This moment had been prefigured by the sacrificial draining of the paschal lamb’s blood and demonstrated that Christ was the perfect, spotless, victim offered to His Father.  The Blood of our Redeemer is called precious because it is the representation of the human life possessed by the Son of God.  In the total surrender of His life, to the last drop, Christ made infinite worship to God the Father and offered an inestimable gift to each of us

Like Our Father In Heaven

In our day, when fatherhood is so attacked, all those who belong to this vocation must redouble their efforts to live up to their calling. A true father is unselfish, prioritizing his obligations before all else. It is a vocation which requires selfless solicitude at all times, but we are promised superabundant help from God to progress continually in this state of life.

Aware of our great need, the liturgy of the Church is constantly imploring God’s help for us. We must rely on God’s infinite mercy, while never forgetting is infinite justice. We are asked to remain confident and trustful, in an age of distrust, and we are assured that Our Lord will always provide the help we need.

The Extraordinary Gift of Faith

Today is one of the only times when a dogma of the Faith was proclaimed by the angels. Our Lord predicted that the preaching of the Apostles would be confirmed by the miracles they would work.  Even a cursory knowledge of Church history gives ample confirmation of these words.  Miracles aid in belief, but they do not cause the virtue of faith.  We should pray for an increase of faith every day of our lives.

The Apostles were commanded on this day to make the world Christian, and we are put to shame when we remember the heroism of the missionaries who sacrificed their lives to follow that command.

Our Lord has prepared a throne for us in Heaven and gives us a foretaste of this coming happiness every time He comes to us in Holy Communion.

Our Daily Duty

As we near the end of this season of great happiness, the Church never ceases to rejoice. St. James gives practical advice in this Epistle for the practice of virtue and avoidance of bad example. The theme of this Mass is one of prayer and sacrifice.

On this day on which we congratulate our mothers, we must remember the primary purpose of marriage and the evil of artificial contraception. The vocations most attacked by the world are those sacramental vocations of marriage and the priesthood. We thank God for the gift of good mothers who work alongside the priests for the salvation of souls.
