The Sin of Human Respect

Our Lord warned us that we would be ridiculed and persecuted by the world so we may not feel ashamed in the face of these attacks.  The sin of human respect causes us to imitate the bad habits of evil companions.  Although this sin especially affects the youth, it can also affect mothers who care more about the feelings of their children than correcting sinful habits when they begin to develop.  We fight the sin of human respect with a holy contempt of the world and by preferring grace over all the world offers.  With these resolutions and the grace of the Holy Ghost we are prepared for the spiritual battles ahead.

Why Did He Ascend?

Ascension Thursday Evening 2024
Today is one of the happiest days of the year because we celebrate the triumph of Christ, and through Him the triumph of the Church.  Christ ascended into Heaven to begin His heavenly priesthood of mediation between God and man.  By this mediation He sent us the Holy Ghost and His sevenfold gifts.  He proved that His kingdom is not of this world, increased the merit of our faith, and invited us to follow Him to our celestial home.  By separating Himself from us for a time, Our Lord purifies and spiritualizes our love, so we may be more perfectly united with Him in this life and the next.

Untainted Love of God

The Gospel for today recalls the words of Our Lord at the Last Supper and is chosen to prepare us all for the Ascension and Pentecost.  We should pray with all our heart and will to receive the Holy Ghost in a more perfect way this year.  It does not matter how evil or how ignorant we are, God will still hear our prayers when we ask for anything to aid in our salvation.  The day of our First Holy Communion is the most important day of our lives.  God made us to receive Him on Earth and join Him in Heaven when we die.

Lest You Lose Your Way

The youth of our day are in the greatest need of the sacrament of Confirmation. The Holy Ghost gives an outpouring of strength and a unique participation in the share of Our Lord’s passion and death in this sacrament. In His weakness we receive our strength. The Gifts of the Holy Ghost are made far more active in our souls. It is only with these helps that we may combat the attacks of the devil and his human agents in the world. The youth are the particular victims of these dangers, and it is only with God’s strength that they will stay faithful.

Confirmation Saturday 2024
Confirmation marks a new outpouring of the graces of the Holy Ghost.  At Baptism we are able to teach the Faith in our own name, but with Confirmation we are given a new strength and the ability to teach and defend the Faith in the name of the whole Church.  In days of persecution, it was the Confirmed who refused to flee and remained to defend the Faith and suffer for Christ.  Those who are Confirmed are made instruments for the spread of Our Lord’s kingdom on Earth.

Salvation is all that matters.  It is necessary that every person and every government should be Catholic.  Today the Church authorities tell us that we must not make converts.  This is cruelty because charity demands that we help our neighbor.  Christ said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.”  When we pray “Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven,” we are asking for the social kingship of Christ.  Christ is the absolute and supreme King.  We must take courage because Christ has overcome the world.

The Davids Of The Future

This is a Mass of great courage and hope.  We know that even when the enemies are encamped around us, they will weaken and fall.  God allows us to see our weakness so that we may turn to Him in prayer.  This is the Mass which tells us not to be afraid.  The evil powers will continue to attack and their propaganda is stronger than ever but if we walk with God, they cannot stop us. We must be faithful to the sacraments and attached to the teachings of Christ.

Bringing Heaven To Earth

This feast was requested by God Himself so that the Blessed Sacrament might be honored not only as a sacrifice but also as the greatest of sacraments.  It is the reason for the other sacraments, It is the reason for the priesthood, and It is the cause of unity in the Mystical Body of Christ.  This feast is perfectly placed after the feast of the Blessed Trinity because it is the greatest means of achieving our last end in possession of the Blessed Trinity.  God placed in our hearts a desire to taste the Infinite, and in the Holy Eucharist we fulfill that desire.

The Reason For All Reality

God is infinite, eternal and uncreated and He depends on no creature for His existence.  God willed to reveal something of His infinite love and He did so through His creation.  God has condescended to tell us about Himself in the revealed truth of the Holy Trinity.  It is such a profound mystery that we cannot explain it because this mystery is infinite and we are finite.  Whenever we need help from God in any of our trials or necessities, we may make The Sign of The Cross and invoke the aid of the Blessed Trinity.

Soul Of My Soul

The Jewish feast of Pentecost celebrated the reception of the Old Law, which God gave to Moses.  During the nine days between the Ascension of Our Lord and this feast of Pentecost the apostles prayed the first novena, which was led by the Blessed Mother.  If we wish to progress swiftly in the spiritual life, we must follow the example of the apostles and go to Our Lady.  It is foolish for any priest to rely on his own skills as a preacher because just as it was with the first sermon of St. Peter on this day, it is the Holy Ghost Who moves the hearts of men.
