Deny Our Lord Nothing

Feast Of The Holy Family 2018

From St. Paul’s Epistle for the feast of the Holy Family we learn about charity and mercy.  We are bound to forgive whenever someone is truly sorry for his offenses against us. The Gospel for this feast is about the finding of Our Lord in the Temple which St. Luke wrote from the recollections of our Blessed Mother.  Christ’s first recorded words when He was twelve years old show His knowledge of His identity as Son of God and His mission to do what His Father commands.  Coming after the Epiphany we learn about the Magi and their star of attraction which led them to the Messias.  We too must be generous and follow Our Savior.

In His Will Is Our Peace

Octave Day of Nativity 2018

The Sacred Liturgy, like nature itself, anticipates great feasts, celebrates them and only gradually leaves them.  So Christmas has its First Vespers, its three Masses and then a week to relish the reality of the Incarnation before renewing the mystery again on its octave day, today.  We also have the recalling of Our Lord’s circumcision on this day when He first shed His Blood for our salvation and we profess our love and devotion to the Blessed Mother for her divine maternity and perpetual virginity.  Today we are grateful for all this and we consign our past to God’s mercy and live in the present moment by God’s grace.  We entrust the future to God’s Providence and use prayer, reflection and counsel to know His signified Will and His Will of good pleasure.  We will achieve the tranquility of order in the coming days by knowing and following God’s plan for us.

Nothing Is Impossible With God

Feast Of The Annunciation 2017

The Son of God became a Man at the Annunciation and so began His priesthood as the mediator between God and men.  At the same time, Our Lady became the Mother of God.  This could only take place because, as St. Gabriel the Archangel said, “nothing is impossible with God”.  Virginity and Maternity were joined miraculously and the Blessed Mother lived a life of trust in God that made her magnanimous and munificent.  Devotion and imitation of her will enable anyone to overcome any challenge in fulfilling God’s Will.

St. Joseph Is Essential To Redemption

Feast Of St. Joseph 2017

St. Joseph was a holy man who fulfilled the law with devotion and heart-felt piety.  He was chosen to be the spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and to be the foster-father of the Son of God.  In that capacity he was the image of God the Father.  As the redemption depended on Our Lady’s “Fiat” at the Annunciaton so it was protected by her marriage to St. Joseph and his protection of her and the Holy Infant.

Live In The Present

Octave Of Christmas 2017

The Octave Day Of Christmas is a re-celebration of the Nativity.  It also commemorates the Circumcision of Our Lord as well as the Solemnity of The Blessed Virgin Mary.  The Church has long celebrated major feasts for more than just one day through what are called octaves or 8-day periods, week-long celebrations which include the day of the Feast itself.  Today is the 8th day of the Octave of the Nativity and it gives us the opportunity to once again rejoice in this tremendous Feast Of Christmas.  As well, it celebrates the Circumcision of Our Lord which is a “type” for our Christian Baptism, as it was for the Jews a sign of the individual’s acceptance into the “chosen people” or the Jewish religion of the Old Testament.  Inasmuch as the circumcision of Jesus was carried out on the lap of the Mother of God, it also reflects the solemnity of Mary in Her singular role as Co-Redemptrix of the human race.

In Praise Of St. Joseph

Feast Of St. Joseph The Worker 2016

Today’s sermon refers to the Epistle of St. James from the Fifth Sunday after Easter in order to caution us not to be overbearing in our relations with others, especially in matters pertaining to the Faith.   With reference to the prayers of the Mass for St. Joseph the Worker, we learn of the great virtues of the man chosen by God to be the foster-father of Jesus.  Although not His biological father, Joseph was a true father to Jesus in every sense of the word and a model for all fathers.  Because of his great virtues, he is called Patron of the Universal Church and even today works for our salvation.  The admonition: “Ite Ad Joseph” is a good one for us to follow, especially in these times.

Obligations to God and Family

Feast of the Holy Family 2016
In this Gospel, the Holy Family went to Jerusalem for the Bar Mitzvah of Jesus Christ because He had reached the age required to become a “Son of the Law.”  This was the moment when a Jewish boy would take on the responsibility of an adult.  For Our Lord it meant that He officially and juridically became the public and formal representative of God, His Heavenly Father.  The reason Christ stayed in the Temple was because from that moment the Temple was His true home.  Our Lord’s “Father’s business” was liturgical worship.  The actions of Christ are a clear lesson to us that our obligations to Almighty God exceed all other obligations, even those towards our family.  When the Gospel says that “He advanced in wisdom and age and grace before God,” it means that as His humanity developed, He manifested more perfectly His wisdom and perfections.
This feast was instituted as a defense against the attacks on the family, and to combat the errors taught about the family’s purpose in society. It teaches us the sublimity of the passive virtues of family life: silence, humility, and fidelity to duty.  These virtues, so often scorned by the world, are the very foundation of a holy human existence.

Swaddling Clothes and a Manger

Christmas Midnight Mass 2015
We should pay special attention to the repetition of the phrase “swaddling clothes” in the Gospel account for today.  The importance of these swaddling clothes is found in the care and love shown to the Holy Infant.  Even though this Child was rejected by so many and was forced to be laid in a filthy feeding trough for animals found in a dark cave, there are those who still loved Him and cared for Him.  This is the story of Christ’s entire life – rejected by many but ardently loved by a few.  The Savior entered the world through the painless, virginal birth of His Mother.  This birth prophesied the Resurrection, in which Our Lord passed through the tomb with new life, while leaving the tomb shut.  On this feast, we celebrate the stupendous moment in which our Redeemer first appeared to mankind in the Flesh.  God the Father became father in a new way today, and all Heaven celebrates the birth of His Son.  On this feast, our sorrows are lifted and we look forward to a greater day to come.
