Love Never Fails

Sermon From
All Souls Day 2013
This beautiful Mass for the Holy Souls in Purgatory has its own sequence entitled “Dies Irae” which means the Day of Wrath.  It is a warning to the living of the judgments of God but ends with hope of happiness in heaven.  Today is proof that the debt for our forgiven sins can be removed and that Divine Love has in fact created Purgatory for that purpose.  Obstacles still persist in the soul after death and impede our entrance into glory.  These can and will be removed by a purification that severs souls from anything that still holds them from ascending.  What do non-Catholics do in the face of death?  Our consoling doctrine can teach them about God’s merciful love.

Sanctity Needs Great Desire

Sermon From The
Feast Of All Saints 2013
Our Lord in the Gospel teaches the Beatitudes which show the blessedness of the saints.  We must have great desire to be holy and we can achieve this with prayer and effort.  Although non-Catholics criticize devotion to the saints they are not following Christian practice which dates back to the second century when several Apostolic Fathers recorded how relics, feastdays and prayers in honor of the Blessed Mother and the martyrs were already well-established.  We must go to the saints who are more powerful now in heaven than they ever were on earth.  We should take the words of St. Augustine to heart: “If they can become saints why can’t I?”  Prayer to the saints will be rewarded.  Heaven is our home and for that we have been created.

The King and His Saints

Sermon From
The Feast Of Christ the King 2013
On this feast of Christ the King we recall Quas Primas, the encyclical letter of Pope Pius XI, which explains this teaching on Our Lord’s social kingdom and the reasons for instituting this feast.  Later this week we have the holyday of obligation known as All Saints day and the following day we have All Souls day which reminds us of the holy souls in Purgatory who are being purified before entering heaven.  Taken together we have the Church Militant, Church Triumphant and Church Suffering being presented to us as the perfect union of the Mystical Body of Christ.  The fact that only Truth has rights produces its wonderful consequences in salvation history where the desire for sanctity and living for God are beautifully seen and realized under the peaceful and loving reign of Jesus Christ.

A Gift For The Unworthy

Sermon From The
20th Sunday after Pentecost 2013
We must thank God for the invaluable gift of the Holy Catholic Faith.  We are not worthy of this gift.  The smallest increase of Faith is a greater gift than the possession of the whole world.  Reason cannot find Faith, it is a gift directly from God.  If miracles could make us believe, then even Christ’s enemies would have believed in Him.  If we do not appreciate our Faith it will be taken from us.  God made us to pray.  Our friends and enemies depend on us and our prayers.  God gave us the Faith so that we may pray for the salvation of our neighbor.

Our Lady’s Sovereignty

Sermon From
14th Sunday after Pentecost 2013
The time between the Assumption and the feast of the Seven Sorrows is considered Our Lady’s thirty days.  The Mass texts of these feasts and that of the Immaculate Heart show her quality as Co-Redemptrix.  This adds fervor to the devotion we already have to our heavenly Queen and Mother.  The depictions of her most pure Heart, as in the Miraculous Medal, show her dependence on the Redemptive Incarnation even more than ours.  We are given confidence to draw close to her as our essential intercessor with her Divine Son.  Theologically we are speaking of her as the secondary instrumental cause of our salvation.  From here we are moved to join her in her sorrows and we practice mortification in union with Our Lord’s sacrifice on the cross.

The Sign Of His Love

Sermon From
The Feast Of The Precious Blood 2013
The shedding of Our Lord’s Precious Blood is a sublime and essential truth of our Faith.  Many clergy and laity have easily fallen away because they did not appreciate this and other truths of God.  We fall by degrees and not mortally immediately.  We must maintain our fervor and love in this life because it is more important on earth than knowing much.  We can only love that for which we have suffered.  The history of this feast shows its importance in modern times to overcome the particular dangers that attack Christ and His Mystical Body.  The Blood of the Savior redeemed us and is the everlasting token of how much He loves us.  We are granted to receive this life giving refreshment whenever we receive Holy Communion.

Why God Permits Suffering

Today is also Father’s Day.  This vocation is attacked in our society and only adds to the suffering and sacrifices that fathers must endure for the sake of their families but God always hears their prayers and heaven awaits them.  The Black Forest fires that have been destroying many homes in our area have even threatened us but God has preserved us.  We have many spiritual helps to protect us and all are welcome here in case of danger.  Things like this make people wonder how evils exist in a world created by our heavenly Father Who saw that all was good.  Non-Catholics are at a loss to answer such questions and some conclude that God cannot exist.  We know that there are many reasons why we suffer and imitating Our Lord on the cross and winning eternal glory is certainly one of them.

He Craves Our Love

Sermon From
The Feast Of The Sacred Heart 2013
It is sad how feasts like this one have been neglected by priests in the past to the detriment of the devotion of the faithful.  Our Lord came to St. Margaret Mary, showed her His Heart and with other things said that even consecrated souls mistreated Him.  Pope Pius XII taught that no Catholic is free from practicing this devotion because it is so essential to the Christian life of sacrifice and of returning love by reparation to God.  The Heart of Our Savior beats ceaselessly with deep affection for each of us and for mankind as a whole.  We must reciprocate by imitating Christ’s life in our own as the saints have especially those with the stigmata.

Draw All Things To Myself

Sermon From
The Feast Of Corpus Christi 2013
St. Bonaventure warned that removal of the Blessed Sacrament from the Church would leave the people like a herd of animals. St. Paul in the Epistle gives a monitum about irreverence to the Holy Eucharist in his day. What about our times? This feast has a special history because of its origin around a miracle. St. Thomas Aquinas composed the texts for this Mass and today’s Divine Office. The teaching about this sacred gift from God is clear and separates our true Church from all other false religions. Christ died to give us Himself in this way and it is sacrilegious, ungrateful and irreverent to treat the Sacrament of His Body and Blood in anything less than a loving and devout manner.

Good and Loyal Shepherd

2nd Sunday after Easter 2013
The sacrament of Holy Orders was instituted by Jesus Christ so that His visible presence on Earth would be continued after His Ascension.  He desired that the graces that would bring us to Heaven would be poured out through His ordained ministers.  Through the priests He makes His Will known to the faithful and guides them on their journey.  The priest is called to live and act in imitation of Christ.  We should never stop thanking God for the truly good shepherds He has sent us.  Our good priests show us leadership in confusion, teach us the meaning of true charity, and we celebrate their perseverance in their holy vocations.
