What the Season Teaches

Sunday within the Octave of Christmas 2012
St. Paul tells us that although we were under the dominion of the world, we are the adopted sons of God and heirs of His kingdom.  It was prophesied that those who accepted the Messias will rise, while those who reject him will fall.  We have three major feasts after Christmas: St. Stephen, St. John, and the Holy Innocents.  We are taught by St. Stephen that it will not be easy to follow Christ.  St. John teaches us that we will be called to stand against heresy as he did in the first century.  And the Holy Innocents remind us of the secular persecution which desires to put Christ to death once again.  We must resist the attacks on the family which are widespread.  We must be thankful because we have been blessed.  We are the shepherds who have been chosen to approach the manger.

The Edifice and the Rock

Feast of Saints Peter and Paul 2012
Today the Church focuses particularly on St. Peter.  He was a simple fisherman, yet he was chosen to lead the Church.  We should desire to imitate the great love and docility that St. Peter showed throughout his life.  We observe the flaws of his nature in the Gospel.  However, we also see that, by the hand of God, a supernatural edifice was built on that natural foundation, just as the Church was built on this rock.  This great saint instructs us in the lesson he was taught by Christ – to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God.  He had such trust in Our Lord that during his imprisonment and in the face of his execution, he slept soundly in his cell.  This is the feast which reminds us that we too must possess undying trust and hope in the providence of God.

A Place Waiting For You

With the celebration of Memorial Day, we should always remember that the soldiers who have served our country, both living and dead, are in need of our prayers.  Apart from the discussion of the politics and morality of war, these people who have suffered and died for us deserve our spiritual help.

Our Lord’s visible reign on Earth ended on the feast of the Ascension and on that day, Heaven became our home.  All the joys and pleasures of this world are as shadows compared to the happiness of Heaven.  The Holy Ghost was sent to mankind so that the presence of God would not be limited to the physical presence of Christ on Earth, but that it might be spread throughout the entire world.  There is a childhood, adolescence, and adulthood in the spiritual life which mirrors that of our natural development.  The Apostles passed through these stages as we all must, and their development reached its final stage on this day.  From that moment on, the Apostles were confirmed in grace and preserved from committing any grave sin.

St. Monica and the Force of Will

In the early Church, widowhood was considered a special vocation for women.  Widows would dedicate themselves to the care of the church and looked to St. Monica as their special patron.  The tears of St. Monica merited the conversion of her son, who left behind his dissolute life and became one of the greatest theologians and philosophers of the Church.  St. Monica came from a Christian family in Northern Africa.  As a young woman she was inclined to drink excessively.  When this vice was discovered, in her shame, St. Monica vowed to never drink wine again and kept that promise for the rest of her life.

When the force of the human will is aided by divine assistance it is truly astounding what can be accomplished.  If we want something enough, we do what is necessary to get it, but if we don’t want to do it, the least excuse will prevent us from trying.  If we are forgetful of self, focused on our duty, and rely on divine assistance, we will overcome the greatest obstacles.

No Longer Spectators

Palm Sunday 2012
Each of us participates in the prayer of the Son of God offered to His Father.  We have received a character through Baptism and it has made us a priestly people.  The priest asks that his sacrifice and ours may be acceptable to Our Lord.  Despite all the distance in time and space, we are truly a part of this event which took place 2,000 years ago.  Today Christ entered the Holy City publicly as King.  After the celebratory part of this ceremony the mission of Our Lord begins in all gravity.  We must desire to be by His side at the Cross, knowing that we will triumph.  When we receive the palm, we are participating in the triumph of God over the devil every day of our life.

Watch For The Signs

Death comes to us all, and at the moment of our death judgment is passed instantaneously.  No longer distracted by the material world, the soul is given a direct intuition of its state in the eyes of God and its eternal abode is fixed forever.  The Holy Souls thirst for our prayers, because they are utterly incapable of helping themselves anymore.

The end of the world is spoken of by Christ more than any other topic.  No matter what happens in the times to come, we must maintain trust in God, knowing that He will not let anything happen to the souls of His friends.  The reason there will be a General Judgment is because every sin has a public aspect to it, and God’s justice must be vindicated publicly.  God gives us signs predicting the end of time to console the just and frighten the wicked, and we must be able to recognize these nine signs, so we may know when our judgment is at hand.
