The Embrace That Wakes The Dead

All Souls Day 2018
We are called on All Souls Day to be like the religious Sisters of the Society of the Helpers of the Holy Souls by praying and sacrificing for the relief and release of those detained in Purgatory.  A member of this congregation, Mother St. Austin, wrote much about the purgatorial life and those who live it.  In excerpts from her poetry we learn about God’s great love of the souls of the Church Suffering and how He embraces them and brings them to heaven once they have been perfected through their time of purification.  St. Mary Magdalen is their patroness because she is the example for us of how the sins of a lifetime can be expiated as she accomplished it in three hours at the foot of the Cross.

Our Fight With The Devil

21st Sunday after Pentecost 2018
The Twenty-first Sunday after Pentecost is the beginning of the end as the liturgical year draws to its conclusion in preparation for the coming end of time.  St. Paul warns us to be prepared in the battle we must wage against the superior forces of the devil.  With prayer we will be victorious and we will become holy.  If we keep our eyes on heaven that is where we will go.

God Will Hear Us

Ash Wednesday 2018
In 1741 the pope declared that Lent is the true sign of the Christian fighting for his salvation by means of penance through fasting which is understood by the receiving of the sacramental of ashes today.  The entire Septuagesima season focused our attention on sin and our identifying the predominant fault we want to eradicate now.  We begin our forty days of prayers, almsgiving and fasting with confidence that God will hear our plea and forgive us as He did with the Ninivites at the preaching of the prophet Jonas.

Remission Of Temporal Punishment

First Friday December 2017

In this conference, the beautiful and consoling teaching of the Church on Indulgences is explained.  Beginning with the early Church we see how the treasury of merits won by Christ, His Blessed Mother and the saints was opened for the benefit of sinners.  The errors of the Reformation in distorting this doctrine are touched upon and practical steps are given to avail ourselves of Indulgences in our daily lives.

The Sanctuary

18th Sunday after Pentecost  2017

The story of the paralytic shows Christ’s power to forgive sins and encourages all sinners to seek mercy, even through ones friends.  Our chapel tour continues with the explanation of the Beatitudes as the hallmarks of holiness.  An in depth study of the sanctuary tells of its different features and the meaning of these fulfillments of the Old Testament’s Holy of Holies.

Live By Love Not Fear

8th Sunday after Pentecost 2017

The Introit for this Mass speaks of the beautiful temple which was a faint image of the church wherein Our Lord is present.  Yet God loves us and not just a building.  He is our Father and loves us like that.  Prayer enables us to feel God’s presence in our lives and make us long for our home in heaven.  Sin is the horrific obstacle which can block that path and defile us.  More is expected of us than the pagans because greater love is demanded of us because we have received greater gifts.

Seek Peace And Pursue It

5th Sunday after Pentecost 2017

The season after Pentecost is the time for sanctity.  We should grow in love of God and of neighbor (which is the measure of love of God).  Today’s Mass warns against the obstacle that anger presents in accomplishing this goal. Although a natural passion, anger easily becomes inordinate and sinful because of the effects of original sin.  Combating the first motions of anger will turn us from this vice and then we should turn to prayer instead and gain the peace that comes from a holy life.

Christ Was Not A Grudge-Holder

St. Pius V – 1st Friday April 2017

Christ’s first words to His Apostles on Easter night were Peace be to you.  By this He re-assured them that He had forgiven them for abandoning Him during His Passion and Death.  We must imitate Our Lord and not hold grudges.  Also, the Introit for the feast of St. Pius V begins “If you love Me, Simon Peter, feed My sheep”.  These words were spoken by Our Lord after Easter and we learn their exegesis and how they fit the life of this great pope.

The Fool’s Thoughts Are In His Mouth

Day 25th Sunday after Pentecost

The scripture passages remind us not to be guilty of detraction by speaking of the faults of others.  We are told that we may not like another person but we must still love that person in that we fervently desire and pray for their salvation.  Once a person’s reputation is damaged how can it be repaired?  A person who reveals the faults of others without cause is a fool who has his thoughts in his mouth whereas a wise man has his thoughts in his heart.  It is difficult sometimes to keep control of our tongue but this is precisely why we must do it so that the adage “we are Christians by our love” is truly the one we live by.  We must “sow the seeds of love not hate” to use an analogy from today’s gospel, lest we be among the “weeds gathered up to be burned at the harvest.”
