Our Spiritual Food

Our Spiritual Food

2nd Sunday after Easter 2025
Good Shepherd Sunday – 1st Communion Sunday – Our Lord made it clear that He is the Good Shepherd Who guides and protects us, His helpless sheep.  It is only through His guidance, and the help of the priests whom He has chosen, that we are able to remain on the true path without straying.  As our Redeemer, He laid down His life for His sheep, and we should always be filled with gratitude for this greatest of all gifts.

In the Holy Eucharist, we are able to look at Jesus Christ.  He created this sacrament so that He would be received by all of us.  The most important time to pray is when Our Lord is present within us after Holy Communion, and we must always assist at Mass with reverence, attention, and devotion.  We should never lose our appreciation for the gift of receiving the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of the Son of God.

The Removal of All Doubt

Low Sunday 2025
We must put out of our minds all distractions while we attend the Holy Mass, so that we may focus solely on the Son of God Who is sacrificing Himself before our very eyes.  When God was creating the cosmos, He had the future sacrifice of His Son in mind.  Everything the Son of God did was for love of His Father.  God permitted the sinful doubt of St. Thomas the Apostle to assist in the fulfillment of His plan.  We thank St. Thomas for his doubt because due to it, Our Lord proved His bodily resurrection and removed any doubt from our own hearts.  If any man sincerely looks for the truth and prays to God to help him find it, God will surely give it to Him.  Let us imitate the great saints and martyrs of the past in their desire for salvation and remove everything from our lives which stands between us and Heaven.

He Has Loved Us to Folly

Good Friday 2025
This is the day on which we put our God to death, and when we sin, we attempt once more to destroy the God Who created us.  The prostration in this ceremony is an expression of our utter nothingness.  Friday was the day on which man was created, and so it is on this day he is redeemed.  God loved us from eternity – loved us to folly.  We are the perpetrators of the Passion, and yet Christ still gave us the grace to be sorry.  The Blessed Mother would have willingly died a million times for our sake, yet she was sustained through the unimaginable pain of soul she endured.  We hope that we might share in our Redeemer’s death today, so that, like the Good Thief, He might remember us also in His kingdom.  The Cross of Christ, along with all His sufferings, will be offered for all eternity to the Trinity for us.  Even if we were saints, we could not fathom how our God could love us in this way.

The Infinite Worshiper

Holy Thursday 2025
Today we are celebrating the birthday of the Sacrifice of the Mass, the Holy Eucharist, and the priesthood.  We have been warned that we must learn from the sacred things we witness during this time, and it is incumbent upon us to call to mind the details of Our Lord’s life during these last days and moments before His death.  Christ explained to the Apostles at the Last Supper that the bread, wine, and lamb of the Passover meal are all one in Him.  For all priests all Thursdays are a day of retreat in commemoration of this great anniversary of the priesthood.  After the moment of the Incarnation all the prayers of the angels now pass through the Son of God made man.  First, He gave us Himself in the consecration of the bread, then in the consecration of the wine He gave us the Mass, and lastly, He instructed the Apostles to “do in like manner” and in these words He gave us the priesthood.  Today we continue the great feast of love practiced by the early Church and thank God for the birthday of the Eucharistic Christ.

Fortified by Heavenly Bread

4th Sunday In Lent – Laetare Sunday 2025
At this Mass we are encouraged to continue onward in our journey through Lent with the help of the Holy Eucharist.  Our Lord gave His ambassadors the power to cast out devils, and in a certain sense, we all participate in this power when confessing our sins.  With this miracle of the multiplication of the loaves Our Lord prepared His followers for Holy Communion.  Baptism and the Holy Eucharist are the sacraments called to mind in this week’s liturgy through the manna in the desert and the water from the rock.  On this Sunday of the Golden Rose, let us remember the Mystic Rose, the Blessed Mother, who will guide us to our eternal reward.

The Value of Penance

1st Sunday of Lent 2025
We must imitate the example of Our Lord in the face of temptation.  When we are afflicted by evil thoughts we should turn to the powerful defense of Sacred Scripture.  Christ’s victory over the devil in this Gospel foreshadows His ultimate victory on the Cross.  Unless we do penance, we will surely perish.  We should have a thorough understanding of what the word “penance” means.  Lent is a time of joy, when we shake off sin and prepare for Heaven.  This season presents to us God’s mercy and gives us the opportunity to obtain a peaceful conscience.  God in His justice is bound by His very nature to punish sin, but when we punish ourselves with works of penance, even our smallest acts have great value, if they come from the heart.  There are many such acts that every Catholic should know and put into practice during this season.

Saved By Love

5th Sunday after Epiphany 2025
This week in the liturgical year is filled with important days.  The lives of St. Blaise and St. Apollonia, as well as the details of the apparitions of Our Lady at Lourdes, should be well known to every Catholic.

During these days, we consider the flight of the Holy Family into Egypt.  They covered a distance of roughly 300 miles through the desert, and all the pains they suffered during this trip were offered up for us.

God wills the salvation of all men, but not all are saved.  With the graces He offers at every moment, our God tries to save us despite the sins we continually commit.  God gives us his love always.  We must not only know God, but we must love Him, because it is only through love that we are saved.  If we truly love God, He should occupy our thoughts more than anything else and we should be on fire with love when we receive Him in Holy Communion.

Be On Guard

3rd Sunday after Epiphany 2025
As Catholics, we should be well informed about the feast days celebrated this week.  We should know the details of the account of St. Paul’s conversion and how it changed the course of the Church, as well as the lives of Saints Polycarp, Francis de Sales, John Bosco, and Ignatius of Antioch.  In the Epistle for today’s Mass, St. Paul instructs us to avoid the sin of revenge.  We must believe that God will reward the good and punish the wicked, either in this life or the next.  In this Gospel account, the deforming disease of leprosy is shown as a symbol of sin.  We are reminded to have gratitude toward God for both spiritual and corporeal favors.  The Roman centurion was a friend to the Jewish people and a monotheist.  His beautiful words of faith have echoed through the centuries at countless Masses.  We must imitate the virtues of this good centurion if we wish to be cured of our spiritual illness and live a holy life.

The Holy Family Provides

Feast of the Holy Family 2025
The Blessed Mother kept the mysteries of Our Lord’s life in her heart, and we should invoke her help whenever we meditate on those mysteries.  Holy Scripture shows St. Joseph to be the clear head of the Holy Family, not by his words but by his actions.  The event recorded in the Gospel took place when Christ was twelve years old, at the time when He became a “Son of the Law.”  By His words Christ makes it evident to the whole world that He knew He was God at every moment of His life.  St. Paul tells us in his Epistle the virtues of the Holy Family which we must imitate and use in examining our consciences.  The father is the head of the family and must be the example of the virtue of religion.  The mother is the heart of the family, who keeps all the spiritual and material needs of the children in her heart.  God has given us parents to assist us in attaining Heaven, and children are called to submit to their parents in holy obedience.  Nothing bad will ever happen to us but that which our loving Father allows.

Simple New Year’s Resolutions

Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus 2025
Not only this day, but this entire month is dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus.  The first miracle the Apostles worked was the cure recorded in today’s Gospel account.  The Second Commandment of the Decalogue is: Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.  We live in a time that deliberately violates this commandment.  God’s name is “I am Who am”, and the Jews were forbidden to say this name except once a year in the Holy of Holies.  In the Old Testament, we see David ask for God to have mercy on him because of the love he has for His Holy Name.  We have been instructed to do all in the name of Our Lord.  Let us fall on our knees with the Magi in adoration of Jesus Christ and in reparation for the blasphemies against Him.
