Avoid The Devil’s Contagion

17th Sunday after Pentecost 2017

The Church begins to prepare us for the end of the liturgical year with this Mass which reminds us of judgment.  The Gospel gives the great commandments of the Law: love of God and neighbor, and the importance of faith in God Incarnate.  St. Paul reminds us to express our charity by promoting peace.  The enemy to all this is the devil which the Collect prays that we avoid his evil influences.

Make Us Love What You Command

13th Sunday after Pentecost 2017

The Collect Prayer for the Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost sums up our desire for an increase of the theological virtues and a desire to love God as He wants.  For this, we should pray the Acts of Faith, Hope and Charity daily because these virtues are essential for gaining heaven and we can never have enough of them.  The Gospel reminds us that we must be grateful to God for His gifts as the leperous Samaritan was after Christ healed him.

Gospel Of Consolation

12th Sunday after Pentecost 2017
Conference After Mass
The parable of the Good Samaritan revolutionized the ancient world’s outlook on how to treat the less fortunate.  Its impact is still felt today because even our secular society has “Samaritan” laws and institutions recalling this lesson from Our Lord.  There is a deeper meaning to this story which explains how Christ is the Good Samaritan toward each of us who have fallen because of our sins.  A yet more elevated understanding of this truth creates the desire in a Christian to face the evils in this world and transform them into good.  The practice of a deep interior life is necessary to accomplish this sanctification of self and of the world around us.

Plunge Into The Sacred Heart

Feast Of The Sacred Heart 2017

Our Lord requested through St. Margaret Mary that this feast of the Sacred Heart be celebrated after the octave of Corpus Christi to make amends for irreverences to the Blessed Sacrament.  Christ further explained how He was offering His Heart as the proof of His great love to the world which was becoming cold, indifferent, uncaring, unfeeling and contemptuous toward God and His gifts.  We can repair for our failings with true devotion.

Turn Your Heart From This World

Quinquagesima Sunday 2017

The Mass for this Sunday focuses on the need for the three theological virtues: Faith, Hope and Charity, with the caution from St. Paul in his Epistle that Faith without Charity accomplishes nothing.  In the Lenten Season which begins in earnest on Ash Wednesday, Holy Mother the Church provides us with multiple opportunities to practice these virtues.  At the same time, we are reminded that our time on earth, no matter our age, is very limited as compared to that of eternity.  The words, “Remember Man that dust thou art and to dust thou shalt return” should cause us to make good use of the time we have left.

What Really Matters

Finally, understanding “to love is to give” and do we really care? By this we can evaluate how much we love and give.

The Remains of Sin

All Souls Day 2015

Very few in our day remember the souls of the departed because of the false belief in the universal salvation of all men.  In assisting the suffering souls in Purgatory, we gain friends who will intercede for us.  We must never waste the time we have been given, because the way we choose to spend our moments on earth will make the difference between an eternity in Heaven or Hell.  Many souls can be released on this day, especially through the intercession of the Virgin Mary.  All our sins have a debt of punishment attached to them.  If we pray our penance well, we could remit our entire debt of temporal punishment, but if we die with these dispositions of soul, we would rather throw ourselves into the punishments of Purgatory than remain in the presence of the infinitely perfect God.

Pray for a Merciful Heart

21st Sunday after Pentecost 2015
Most of us can think of a time during our life when we were slow to forgive one who asked for forgiveness.  The terrible crime of refusing forgiveness to those who sincerely ask for it is in direct contradiction to the Our Father, in which we ask that God forgive our trespasses as we forgive others.  Spiritual reading and the Holy Rosary are powerful weapons against the devil, as well as some of the greatest aids to living a true Christian life.  Every Catholic should be familiar with the 15 promises that the Blessed Mother made to those who devoutly pray the Rosary.

Spiritual Childhood

19th Sunday after Pentecost 2015
St. Francis is universally esteemed by both Catholics and non-Catholics alike.  Despite living many centuries apart, the lives of St. Frances and St. Thérèse share many similarities, particularly in regard to their practice of spiritual childhood.  The origins of this doctrine can be found in Our Lord’s words, “unless you become like this little child, you will not enter the kingdom of God.”  Spiritual childhood is closely linked to poverty of spirit, by which one receives a deep understanding of his need and utter helplessness.  This leads to childlike dependence on God’s grace.  Spiritual childhood is indispensable for all who wish to possess the Kingdom of God.
