Have Courage

Octave of Christmas 2021
As we face the unknown that awaits us during the coming year, we can take comfort in the divine promise that Our Lord will be with us always.  In addition, Our Lady of Guadalupe tells us through Juan Diego that she is our Mother and cares for us.  This octave day of Christmas renews all the joys of the Nativity.  It also commemorates the Circumcision and honors in a special way the divine maternity and the perpetual virginity of the Blessed Mother.  Finally, advice is given in the form of resolutions which will help us progress in our spiritual life in the days ahead.

Christmas Brings Freedom

Christmas Midnight Mass 2020
Despite all the efforts to lessen the reality and the message of Christmas by those opposed to God, we again celebrate the feast of Our Lord’s Nativity.  The Light has come into this world of darkness and brings truth, life and freedom from sin and its evil effects.  The Son of God, while retaining His divine nature, assumed a human nature and was born in Bethlehem from His ever virgin Mother.  His coming is just the beginning and instills the world with hope for a better future which will lead eventually to heavenly glory.  We must love this Holy Infant in return and pray and help those less fortunate than us to receive the graces offered at Christmas.

Ave Maria

Feast Of The Immaculate Conception 2020
This feast day honors the infallible teaching of the Church that the Blessed Virgin Mary, from the first moment of her existence, was free from original sin and all sin by reason of the future merits of her Son’s Passion and Death.  Her redemption is unlike ours because hers was preservative, meaning evil never touched her, whereas ours is liberative, meaning we were freed from evil that held us.  This exclusive privilege of hers was so she would be a worthy mother of the Son of God and that, although not the same degree, she would be like her Son in holiness and finally that she would be duly prepared to be the Co-Redemptrix, congruently not condignly as her Son alone could be.  All these doctrines prove for us Wordsworth’s line that Our Lady is “our tainted nature’s solitary boast”.

Joy And Fear

19th Sunday After Pentecost 2020
Feast of the Divine Maternity
Today is also the feast of the Divine Maternity which was clearly taught at the Council of Ephesus to correct the errors of Nestorius.  The Holy Virgin is the Mother of God, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity Who has a divine and a human nature.  St. Paul in the Epistle encourages us to put on a new life of grace and abandon lying, stealing, anger and all other vices incompatible with God’s life in the soul.  Our Lord tells the parable of the marriage feast in today’s Gospel.  This was spoken on Tuesday of Holy Week to those about to kill Him.  To the saved it was the promise of enjoying the heavenly banquet one day but to the unrepentant evildoers it was a warning of being cast out for eternity.

O Mary, We Crown Thee Today

Feast Of Our Lady Of The Holy Rosary 2020
Today’s Gospel is from St. Luke who records the mystery of the Annunciation as he learned it from Our Lady.  This is the first mystery of the Rosary which is meant to be a garland of roses in honor of the Blessed Mother.  The history of the Rosary shows its tie to religious life, the sacred Liturgy, devotion to the holy souls and victory against heretics and infidels.  This is the most favored prayer by the Holy Virgin and the means for her preserving us during these dark days and saving us for Heaven.  It is a contemplative and therefore difficult prayer that can be made easier if prayed alongside our heavenly Mother.

See The Rosary As Our Lady Does

Feast Of The Holy Guardian Angels – First Friday Conference, September 2020
Devotion to the angels is critical for the priest and the faithful.  In the Gospel Our Lord says to become as little children and learn to trust Him.  This is indispensable. October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary and St. Dominic and Blessed Allan taught the people about its importance by giving the fifteen promises attached to its recitation.  The Mysteries of the Rosary are the memories for Our Lady of the Incarnation, Redemption and Heavenly reward of her divine Son. The Rosary is a prayer that easily leads to contemplation.  Any problems or difficulties will disappear with its recitation.

Our Mother Of Perpetual Help

Seven Sorrows Of The Blessed Virgin Mary 2020
Our Lord addressed His Mother as “Woman” from the Cross as a title of reverence and honor but also a reminder of Eve, the first woman, who was mother of the living.  Our Lady is Mother of all those alive with sanctifying grace.  Today recalls her seven principal sorrows which earned for her the title of Co-Redemptirx and her place by our side while we struggle in the valley of tears.  Her great privileges of the Immaculate Conception, Assumption and their source her Divine Maternity elevate her to the heights where she belongs but her sorrows join her to us, her poor suffering children.  Her miraculous image, known as the Mother of Perpetual Help, shows her suffering at our indifference to her young Son fleeing from the angels who are showing Him the instruments of His Passion.  The Blessed Mother looks at us to compassionate Him.  We must learn to live as She did so we can rejoice with her in heaven one day.

Our Souls Must Rule Our Bodies

14th Sunday After Pentecost 2020
This week has two Marian feasts: the Nativity and the Most Holy Name of Mary.  These give us the opportunity to increase our devotion to the Blessed Mother for her role in our salvation, sanctification and protection.  In the Epistle for today St. Paul warns his converts again of the sins which will keep them from entering heaven.  Instead they should put to death the works of the flesh and practice the works of the spirit which result in the twelve fruits of the Holy Ghost.  Our Lord in the Gospel teaches us to seek first His kingdom and everything we need will be given besides.  This has always been our experience.

Love God With Your Whole Being

12th Sunday After Pentecost 2020
The month of August is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and we should imitate our Blessed Mother whom Our Lord said “heard the word of God and kept it”.  This Gospel about the Good Samaritan reminds us that we can see how much we love God by how we love our neighbor.  Christ summarized all the law by saying that we must love God with all our being and our neighbor as ourselves.

Child Of Divine Choice

Feast Of The Immaculate Heart Of Mary 2020
On this beautiful feast of Our Lady we learn about being clothed in the habit of our community on the road to the priesthood.  In following a vocation which God has chosen for us we must attend carefully to these instructions on our dispositions which are critical to being successful.  We then hear about the significance of the different parts of the habit and what they mean in the religious life.  Finally, the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary is described and how wonderful it is for us to have recourse to her on the way of perfection.
