The Best Gift for His Mother

First Friday, December 2024
Conference on Grace and The Immaculate ConceptionWhen we speak of perfect passive conception, we refer to the moment in which the product of active conception is infused with a soul and becomes a human person.  From this moment of perfect passive conception, the Virgin Mary was redeemed in a preservative, not a liberative, manner.  The Blessed Mother from this point possessed a greater union with God than all the angels and saints.  Our Lady was not only free from the guilt of Original Sin, but also the concupiscence of the flesh, of the eyes, and the pride of life.  By a divine ligature, she was unable to consent to even the slightest imperfections.

Sanctifying Grace is a created share in the supernatural life of God.  When God breathed human life into Adam, He breathed a share of divine life into him as well.  Grace must be valued above all things.  We must be willing to live and die to preserve it.  The Blessed Mother was given the plenitude of grace in preparation for her role as the Mother of God, as well as Mother to each one of us.

Our Spiritual Resolutions

1st Sunday of Advent 2024
Today is New Year’s Day in the Church, and we are reminded by the violet color at the beginning of the liturgical year to do penance for our sins.  We have a lot of work to do this Advent to prepare for the coming of Our Lord into our souls.  This is the time to make spiritual New Year’s resolutions.  If we wish to obtain our heavenly reward, we must perform the spiritual and corporal works of mercy and maintain purity of body and soul through prayer and mortification.  The Son of God honored our flesh when He took to Himself a human nature.  In following the purpose of this Advent season, let us “put aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light!”

Peace and Rest

Vigil of Christmas 2023
Today the Church cries out, “We will have Him to rule over us!”  This Mass is like an early celebration of Christmas.  “Come Lord and Reign!” says the Alleluia verse.  According to St. Ignatius Martyr, the reason St. Joseph was betrothed to the Blessed Virgin Mary was to hide the miracle of her virginal conception from the devil, who was searching for the fulfillment of that prophecy.  Today we know that the Lord is coming, and tomorrow we will be with Him in the manger through the Holy Eucharist.

Freedom From Anxiety

3rd Sunday of Advent 2023
Gaudete Sunday – This is a day in which we take joy in our Catholic Faith, a day without anxiety or trouble of heart.  We must make our petitions known to God, trusting that they will be answered in the best way possible.  God gives us the grace to ask for the helps we need.  Those who are of good will enjoy peace in this life.  The patrons of Advent are the prophet Isaias, St. John the Baptist, and the Blessed Virgin.  We must strive to remove whatever is in our life which impairs our union with Our Lord.

No Hope Without Tribulation

Second Sunday of Advent 2023
With great hope we are reminded of eternity during this season.  All virtue builds on nature, and the same is true of the virtue of hope.  Hope cannot exist without difficulty and tribulation.  We hope in God, not despite our sufferings, but in light of our sufferings.  The saints took great joy in their tribulations because they knew God wished for them to live the life of His Son.  Adversity opens the eyes which prosperity holds shut.  We must fight the good fight in this life if we wish to be glorified in the next.

Sanctification Through The Liturgy

First Sunday of Advent 2023
On this first day of the liturgical year, we begin with a view of the end of time.  It is a warning for the enemies of Christ.  A day is coming when God will judge the nations.  This is a Gospel of hope.  “Christ loves us too much not to share His sufferings and joys.”  The ordinary means of sanctification is the holy liturgy.  It conforms us to Christ.  It brings the mysteries of Christ to life on the altar.  In the season of Advent, we share in the preparation of all the patriarchs and prophets for Christ’s coming.

The Judgment of God

4th Sunday Of Advent 2022
The theme of the Epistle for this Mass is judgment.  Not only the judgments that men make towards each other, but especially the Last Judgment at the end of time.  We are forbidden to judge rashly, but we are not forbidden from making any judgments at all.  We have all experienced the harm of rash judgment, but it should make us strive all the more towards keeping our conscience clear, as St. Paul instructs.  If we are followers of Jesus Christ, we have nothing to fear.  We must use the extra week of Advent that has been given to us by beginning to live with true Catholic hearts.

Be Not Anxious

3rd Sunday Of Advent 2022
Gaudete Sunday
The color of the rose denotes a mixture of sadness and joy, while the flower itself represents Christ.  Those who abandon themselves completely enjoy the true peace and freedom from anxiety spoken of at this Mass.  Christ always hears the prayers of those who trust with all their heart.  Christmas is the beginning, not the end.  When Our Lord was born, the world immediately attempted to end His life.  We do not see the victory and joy yet, but we have a foretaste with the graces of Christmas.  It will be at the moment when all seems lost that Christ will triumph completely.  We remain free, our hearts cannot be dominated.

Be Lifted Up!

2nd Sunday Of Advent 2022
In this season we know we are supposed to accomplish what took 4,000 years to accomplish as the world prepared for Christ’s coming.  We must ask God for help for He can give us all we need in an instant.  We come in contact with God when we come in contact with Jesus Christ in the liturgy.  This is the season for doing something, because simply avoiding sin is not enough.  Let us renew our consecration to the Sacred Heart and learn to love and serve Him better.
