Draw Us To Yourself

Exaltation of the Holy Cross 2018
The feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is a renewal of Good Friday but with the emphasis on the glorifying of the instrument of our salvation. From His Holy Cross, He calls to us and draws us to Himself.  At this Mass we are meant to respond generously to this invitation and become as Tertullian described the early Christians “Cross Lovers”.  The Cross was the means by which the Church was delivered from three centuries of persecution when Constantine triumphed by it.  His mother, St. Helen, shortly after discovered the true Cross.  Centuries later the emperor restored the Cross to its basilica in Jerusalem.  All these events are remembered today and encourage us to remain faithful.

Prevenient And Concomitant Grace

16th Sunday after Pentecost 2018 Conference
The Collect of the Mass for the Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost is a concise and direct statement about another beautiful aspect of the doctrine on grace.  The realization of this teaching will make us better appreciate how much we depend on God for the littlest supernatural act we perform – no matter how easy and even connatural it seems to us.  St. Paul’s Epistle shows us the principle that is God, namely, that Goodness is self-diffusive and more so the closer we are to It.

Labor Day

15th Sunday after Pentecost 2018
The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost is a quintessential Mass for the season.  From the hope expressed in the Introit to the Communion verse about our Life in the Eucharist we are assured of God’s mercy on the path to Heaven.  This year the Sunday falls before Labor Day and it is good to remember the holiday’s Catholic roots in medieval Guilds and what the modern popes have written about this important component of society.

We Cannot Serve Two Masters

14th Sunday after Pentecost 2018
The Epistle and Gospel for the 14th Sunday after Pentecost make as clear as black and white the battle between good and evil.  We must renounce our vices and not let anything stand in the way of our progress towards God and Heaven.  As we can fall by degrees from faults, to venial sins and finally mortal ones, so we can rise by degrees to sanctity.  Today is the day to start on the road to holiness.

God Hears The Humble

13th Sunday after Pentecost 2018

This Mass for the 13th Sunday after Pentecost begins with a prayer to God that He hear us and this presumes that we are humble. To reach Heaven requires our prayer and spiritual reading lest we become the playthings of the devil.  God showers His graces and gifts on us so we can reach happiness with Him at the end of our lives.  He also gives these so we can share them with others on their road to Heaven, too.

About Mary, Enough Is Never Said

Assumption Evening 2018
The feast of the Assumption celebrates the taking of Our Lady into heaven body and soul after her earthly life was completed.  This is in imitation of her Divine Son of Whom she is a perfect image.  The early Christians gathered around her after the Ascension and we do the same and with fervor that should increase always.  Love of our heavenly Mother is a sign of predestination.

Ave Maris Stella

Feast Of The Assumption 2018
The Assumption is the prerogative of our Blessed Mother which fixes Her in heaven, body and soul, as the Star which leads us home as the Star of the Sea (Stella Maris) did for early sailors.  In the midst of the darkness of this life, we always have the hope of salvation because we see the Blessed Virgin Mary shining glorious and beckoning us to Heaven.  The apparition of Our Lady of the Willow is a heart-warming reminder of Her maternal solicitude for each of us, especially those most in need of her mercy.

Our Sufficiency Is From God

12th Sunday after Pentecost 2018
This week is the feast of the Assumption of Our Lady, body and soul, into heaven.  The feasts of the school teacher, St. Cassian, and the foundress of the Poor Clares.  The Epistle for the 12th Sunday after Pentecost teaches about sufficient grace and its necessity in our lives – without it we cannot be saved.  The Gospel is the beautiful story of the Good Samaritan which reveals the Sacred Heart in all its mercy for any unfortunates.  It has the deeper meaning concerning the seeking out of every sinner by Our Lord who heals him and entrusts him to His Church for care and comfort.

My Flesh Has Been Renewed

11th Sunday after Pentecost 2018
The feasts for this week give cause for us to thank God and take strength in upholding the faith. This Mass for the Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost recalls Our Lord’s Resurrection and the Easter sacraments of Baptism and Holy Eucharist. St. Paul lists all the witnesses to Christ’s Risen Body and the Gospel relates the story of the healing of the deaf and dumb man. The exact gestures and words of Jesus are repeated during the ceremonies for Baptism. All this leads to union with Our Lord in Holy Communion.
