The Eyes of Faith

Low Sunday 2012
We should all pray for a happy death because we cannot merit it without asking for God’s grace in those last moments. We should also frequently ask that all the punishment due to our sins be removed on our deathbed by the reception of Extreme Unction. The Church has always taught that the priest can not only forgive sins but remove the punishment due to them.

This Mass is about faith, but we must remember that no saint has had great faith without great humility. It is only when we realize how much we need help that we ask God for help. We possess nothing good which we have given ourselves. Even faith is a gift from God for which we cannot take credit. Humility is the foundation, faith is the walls, and charity is the roof of the great structure God has built in us.

Supply What I Lack

Easter Sunday 2012
We pray that we may receive all the benefits of this Mass.  The Mass of today, the greatest of all feasts, is the crown of the liturgical year.  The historical event is made present again at the Mass.  The Resurrection is the central doctrine of the whole Catholic Church.  Christ came for the purpose of saving us.  When we receive Holy Communion at the Mass today, we can receive any graces we did not obtain this Lent.

The Prophecy of the Resurrection

Easter Midnight Mass 2012
All the scenes of the paschal mystery are also prophecies of things yet to come. Before Christ comes to judge the living and the dead, cataclysms will affect the whole Earth, and He will send angels to announce the Savior in glory. Just as the soldiers were terrified and fell down as dead men, so too will the enemies who have fought Our Lord react to His coming in those days. It will be at the darkest moment when everyone is at the brink of despair and all seems lost, when Our Divine Savior will make His appearance and triumph over all. May we receive all the fruits God desires for us on this day while we confidently await the victory to come.

A Taste of Triumph

Easter Vigil 2012
Our Lord is the Author and Minister of the holy liturgy, and because all the acts of Christ during His life on Earth were acts of worship, we relive His life through the liturgy.  These rituals are not empty, but are a true living memorial which places us as participants in these mysteries.  The liturgy also points to a time yet to come.  It points to the day when all the works of the Son of God will be fulfilled in the final victory over all His enemies.  This night we receive a foretaste of that triumph.  The sacramental order uses the simple elements of creation to impart supernatural favors.  When the fire is lit, God begins to renew His Resurrection from the dead, and our Redeemer, in the light of the candle, leads us to the baptismal water that purifies our souls.

He Suffered All for You

Good Friday 2012
The liturgical prayer of the faithful for all people, united with the prayer of Christ for His enemies on the Cross, was a practice from the earliest days of the Church.  We prostrate in this ceremony to express our profound sorrow for having personally caused the death of Christ.  He died for love of each of us, and so that we would love Him in return.  The love God has for us is so far beyond reason that it is as impossible to grasp as He Himself.  God suffered in proportion to all the sins that have ever been and will ever be committed.  How much love must we give in return?  This is truly the saddest and happiest day in the history of the world.

The Remedy for All Weakness

Holy Thursday 2012

On this night we celebrate the institution of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and Holy Orders.  Who would forgive our sins and give us the sacraments of Christ had He not founded the priesthood?  Just as He humbled Himself before the Apostles in the washing of their feet, God Almighty surrenders Himself to us in the gift of His being in the Holy Eucharist.  On this night, in the stripping of the altars, we also remember the great attacks and abuses Christ endured at the beginning of His Passion and still endures in offenses against the Blessed Sacrament today.  The Holy Mass is the most effective means of conversion from and reparation for sin.  How many misfortunes do Catholics face because of their neglect or abuse of the greatest gift of God on Earth – the Holy Mass?  Our Lord desires to come to us, concealing His omnipotent power, so that we might feel welcomed to approach Him.

No Longer Spectators

Palm Sunday 2012
Each of us participates in the prayer of the Son of God offered to His Father.  We have received a character through Baptism and it has made us a priestly people.  The priest asks that his sacrifice and ours may be acceptable to Our Lord.  Despite all the distance in time and space, we are truly a part of this event which took place 2,000 years ago.  Today Christ entered the Holy City publicly as King.  After the celebratory part of this ceremony the mission of Our Lord begins in all gravity.  We must desire to be by His side at the Cross, knowing that we will triumph.  When we receive the palm, we are participating in the triumph of God over the devil every day of our life.

Make Me Trust as She Does

Feast of the Annunciation 2012

In this Epistle, Isaias the Prophet warns the king of Israel about the danger of syncretism.  It is far more likely that in relationships with bad friends, it is not the good that lift up the bad but the bad who drag down the good.  At this moment, Isaias made a prophecy, not only for the Hebrews, but for all people – that of the Virgin Birth.  The truth of this dogma far surpasses the ability of words to express it.  Upon the consent of the Blessed Mother, God the Son took a human body and soul and began to take nourishment from her.  Because Christ is both God and man, He is Head and Master of all creation.  We are able to glorify God more perfectly than brute animals with the use of our intellect and will.  All the gifts given to the Blessed Mother were to prepare her for this moment.  All true Christians love and esteem the Virgin Mary, and strive to imitate her humility, confidence, and trust.

A Vision of Hell

Passion Sunday 2012

The liturgical year reflects the life of Christ, and we now reach the fruition of His earthly life with the approach of Holy Week.  All the images are veiled to remove all consolations so that we may better unite with the desolation Christ endured in those moments.  The great mystic, Josefa Menéndez, received visions of Purgatory and Hell.  Our Lord spoke of these punishments of the next life very often.  Sister Josefa frequently spoke of the inability of the lost souls to love, and that if even the slightest act of love were permitted it would no longer be Hell.  She saw that a soul which had gone to great lengths to deprive and mortify itself on Earth would not endure the sufferings of Hell.  We should have an undying fear of this eternal punishment, practice the virtue of hope, and respond to the continual graces God offers.

A Father to Us All

Feast of St. Joseph 2012
In the Hypostatic Union of Jesus Christ, He possessed no human personality, and because of this, His human nature is transcendent and universal.  In a sense all our human natures are found in His.  St. Joseph, who was chosen to be the father and protector of Our Lord’s Body on Earth, is a true father to the Mystical Body of Christ – our father.  When a boy comes into his manhood, he realizes an inherent responsibility to be a protector of those around him, especially the most needy.  A true man must possess both strength and compassion and St. Joseph is the perfect exemplar of these manly virtues.  We frequently remember the sorrows of the Blessed Mother, but we neglect to remember how much St. Joseph sacrificed and suffered in the care of the Holy Family.  The age when the whole Church will recognize the greatness and authority of this Patron of the Universal Church is yet to be seen.
