The Transfiguration of Our Lord
August 6, 2026
Twice in the course of the year the Church commemorates our Lord’s Transfiguration on Mount Tabor—during Lent, on the second Sunday, in order to bear witness to His Divinity as His Passion draws near, and again today to celebrate His exaltation in glory. The feast of the Transfiguration had long been kept on August 6 in different churches of the East and West. Callixtus III ordered its observance by the whole Church to commemorate the victory of John Hunyadi over the Turks near Belgrade in 1456, which was announced in Rome on August 6. Many churches dedicated to our Savior (including the Lateran Basilica) keep the Transfiguration as their titular feast.
