St. Ubaldus

May 16, 2019

Bishop of Gubbio, his native city, St. Ubaldus is remembered in central Italy as a bishop who was entirely devoted to the duties of his office. He led a life of exceptional austerity. The saint often defended his flock in public dangers. Hearing one day that a sedition was raised in one of the streets, he ran out and through himself down between the combatants. The mutineers all threw away their weapons and condemned themselves for the murder of their holy bishop. Then the saint, thanking God that the tumult was appeased, dispelled their fears by assuring them he was not hurt. And, when the emperor Frederick Barbarossa threatened to plunder Gubbio, St. Ubaldus met him on the road and in this interview softened the heart of that tyrant and obtained the safety of his people. The Collect of the Mass alludes to his power over evil spirits. St. Ubaldus belonged to the Order of Canons Regular of St. Augustine. He died on May 16, 1160 and his body remains incorrupt.
