St. Rosalia

September 4, 2025

St. Rosalia Sinibaldi left her home when she was young to live as a recluse in a cave on Mount Coschina in Sicily. An inscription was found carved on its walls which reads: “I, Rosalia, daughter of Sinibald, lord of Quisquina and Rosae, decided to live in this cave for the love of my Lord Jesus Christ.” She later moved near Palermo and died about 1160. A wooden crucifix of hers was moved from an archabbey in Messina to Palermo. This relic is inscribed: “I, Sister Rosalia Sinibaldi, place this wood of my Lord, which I have ever followed, in this monastery.” In 1624 a plague in Palermo was ended by the procession through the streets with the relics of her body. The maiden’s remains were revealed in a vision by St. Rosalia for this purpose. Other relics of the saint were discovered with her bones. Out of gratitude the people of Palermo built a church over her hermitage and revere her as their patroness.
