St. Mildred
February 20, 2019
Daughter of Domneva and Merwald, a son of king Penda, St. Mildred was consecrated first abbess of Minstre and at the same time received to the habit seventy young women. With humility, St. Mildred behaved as the servant of her sisters and conducted them to virtue by the authority of her example for all were ashamed not to imitate her watching, mortification and prayer and not to walk accord to her spirit. She died a lingering, painful illness, towards the close of the seventh century. The monastery of Minstre was established to supply prayers continually to God for the repose of the souls of two princes killed by their uncle, King Egbert who supplied the land for the monastery to repair for his crime.
