St. Margaret, Queen of Scotland

June 10

St. Margaret the great-niece of St. Edward the Confessor, after the battle of Hastings, fled to the court of Malcolm, the King of Scotland, whom shortly afterwards she married. She proved a model mother and exemplary queen who brought up her eight children in an atmosphere of great devotion and worked hard to improve the morality of her subjects. She was known as the mother of orphans and the treasurer of the poor. She died at Dunfermline, near Edinburgh, on June 16, 1093. The holiness of her life and the numerous miracles wrought after her death caused her to be venerated throughout the Church. Clement X proclaimed her patroness of Scotland and Innocent XII inserted her name in the general calendar of the Roman rite.
