St. Bruno

October 6, 2017

Canon of St. Cunibert’s of Cologne and professor of theology at Rheims, St. Bruno, decided to leave the world. After a trial of monastic life at Molesmes he withdrew to a lonely mountain in Dauphine, not far from Grenoble, and with six companions founded the hermitage of the Grande Chartreuse. Taken from his hermitage by Odo, prior of Cluny, who had become Pope, as Urban II, and desired to have him as counselor, Bruno finally obtained permission to return to the only form of life that held attraction for him. He died in this second Charterhouse on October 6, 1101. St. Bruno is thus the founder of the Carthusian Order, which combines the solitary with community life.
