St. Agnes of Monte Pulciano
April 20, 2017
Native of Monte Pulciano in Tuscany, St. Agnes had an extraordinary relish and ardor for prayer in her infancy and often spent whole hours in reciting the Our Father and Hail Mary, on her knees. At fifteen she moved from a convent of St. Francis to the order of St. Dominic at Proceno in Orvieto and was appointed abbess. She slept on the ground with a stone under her head and for fifteen years she fasted always on bread and water till she was obliged by her directors to mitigate her austerities. Her townsmen prevailed on her to return and establish a convent in Monte Pulciano. The gifts of miracles and prophecy rendered her famous among men, though her long sicknesses, her humility and charity were the graces which recommended her to God. She died in 1317 at the age of 43.
