Our Lady of Ransom

September 24

The Order of Our Lady of Ransom, known first under the name of the Order of St. Eulalia for the ransom of captives, was established in the thirteenth century. Its aim was to redeem the Christian prisoners of the Mohammedans. In the fifteenth century its foundation was attributed to St. Peter Nolasco and St. Raymund of Pennafort, to whom, it was said, Our Lady appeared, taking the work under her protection. The feast of September 24 commemorates this apparition. It was at first celebrated by the Order and afterwards extended to the general calendar of the Roman rite in 1696.
