Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

August 15

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 15 of August, repeating indefinitely

“Blessed among women” by reason of her divine maternity, Our Lady, the Immaculate Virgin, who from the moment of her conception was privileged to escape original sin, could not know the corruption of the tomb. The Mass for the feast brings out clearly both the Assumption itself and its theological congruity. It sees Mary glorified in the woman described by the Apocalypse (Introit), in the King’s daughter in golden robes of Psalm 44 (Gradual), in the woman who, with her Son, will be the victorious enemy over the serpent (Offertory); it applies to her the praise given to Judith (Epistle), and especially it recognizes in Mary’s Assumption the final achievement of all the glory deriving from the divine maternity and the fulfillment of Mary’s own prophecy in the Magnificat (Gospel). The Collect asks that, like the Blessed Virgin, we may ever have our eyes firmly fixed on the things of heaven, obtain the glorious resurrection and share her glory in heaven.
