The first page in the history of creation begins with the angels. Angels are far superior to man in their power and knowledge but, because their great intellect is capable of apprehending truth without the laborious discourse of the human mind, they cannot receive forgiveness as we can. In the moment of their test at the beginning of time, they chose God or rejected Him for all eternity, and their decision could never be altered.

Because our warfare is “not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers,” we must invoke our powerful, angelic allies to come to our defense against Lucifer and his followers in the world. Although our enemies may be mighty, tireless, countless, and vengeful, St. Michael, the Prince of the Angels, takes special care to protect each individual soul. The moving story of St. Galgano Guidotti and the miraculous ‘Sword and the Stone,’ which remains in the world to this day, are a testimony of St Michael’s solicitous care for all who invoke him. The angels help us to layup treasures for ourselves in Heaven and in fostering humility to become like the little child in the Gospel. The heavenly seats lost to the devils by pride can only be one for us by humility.
