Frequent and Humble Confession

Catholics should familiarize themselves with the examples of sanctity we are given this week in Saints Cornelius and Cyprian and St. Joseph of Cupertino.

When the faithful fall into serious sin, they must receive the sacrament of Penance to be restored to the State of Grace, and this is referred to as a ‘confession of necessity.’ Confession of venial sins only is referred to as a ‘confession of devotion.’ Frequent confession lifts the burden of venial sins that weighs on the soul. Even though venial sins can be forgiven outside of sacramental absolution, there are great benefits to having our sins forgiven in the sacrament of Penance. Special graces are granted to us every time we receive absolution to help us avoid sin in the future and to help increase our sorrow for our offenses against God. We are granted peace of mind by this sacrament. Even though Original Sin has been removed from our soul, the remains of sin and inclinations to evil continue. We must remain humble, listen to God, and be generous in helping our neighbor.
