The feast of Christ The King sums up our faith in the Incarnate God and makes us pray “Thy Kingdom Come.” As good subjects we should know the catechism, pray and give ourselves in return for the divine self sacrifice of Our Lord. We have the examples of the saints who have done so and were the means of the miraculous in this world. Such are needed today when Christianity faces its bleakest future.
The story of the paralytic shows Christ’s power to forgive sins and encourages all sinners to seek mercy, even through ones friends. Our chapel tour continues with the explanation of the Beatitudes as the hallmarks of holiness. An in depth study of the sanctuary tells of its different features and the meaning of these fulfillments of the Old Testament’s Holy of Holies.
The feast of Corpus Christi celebrates the sacramental aspect of the Holy Eucharist while Holy Thursday concentrates on the sacrificial. The Church and priests exist for this central teaching of the faith which is known as transubstantiation. St. Bonaventure warned centuries ago that without this civilization would return to its base origins and people would degenerate to behavior like beasts. However, receiving Our Lord in this sacrament gives us the foretaste of heaven which is so necessary to go there eventually.
The teaching about the Blessed Trinity and Its Indwelling in the faithful is the hallmark of the Catholic Faith and necessary for salvation. The realization of this Truth should inspire us to be true soldiers of Christ as confirmed Christians and exercise it by participating in the feast of Corpus Christi, for example. The lukewarm imperil their own salvation by not becoming fervent.
On Pentecost Sunday the Holy Ghost manifested Himself under the two visible signs of wind and fire. The wind stirred the pilgrims who were in the city for the Jewish feastday and drove them to the Upper Room where they heard the Apostles speaking in all their languages of the wonderful works of God. The Apostles were able to do this after the Holy Ghost had appeared to them in parted tongues of fire and rested upon each of them. This visible theophany marked the beginning of the sanctification of the world which the Holy Ghost will accomplish until the end of time.
Christ’s first words to His Apostles on Easter night were Peace be to you. By this He re-assured them that He had forgiven them for abandoning Him during His Passion and Death. We must imitate Our Lord and not hold grudges. Also, the Introit for the feast of St. Pius V begins “If you love Me, Simon Peter, feed My sheep”. These words were spoken by Our Lord after Easter and we learn their exegesis and how they fit the life of this great pope.
The words of today’s gospel: “I am the Good Shepherd” have a significant meaning for those of us “sheep” who look for protection and guidance from their Shepherd. There is also a reference to the last three chapters of the Book of Isaiah – prophecies relating specifically to the coming of Christ which curiously were deleted from a version of the Old Testament. One can only wonder why this was done. In any case, we should all remember the words of Jesus: “I know mine and mine know me. As the Father knoweth me, and I know the Father: and I lay down my life for my sheep. And other sheep I have, that are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice, and there shall be one fold and one shepherd.”
Holy Thursday can be summed up in one word: Love. This Divine-Human love in the Sacred Heart gave us the Holy Eucharist, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the Holy Priesthood today.  True Catholics love all these sacred things in return and follow Our Lord’s command to love one another. Finally, we appreciate the cost of this love to Our Savior and what we do in reparation.
The new Liturgical Year begins with the first Sunday of Advent. Liturgy is derived from a Greek word and means public worship. It differs from private prayer in that the ends of adoration, thanksgiving, reparation and petition are united with the entire church and its public prayer. The official prayer of the Mystical Body is then made sublime and sacramental through the presence of Christ. The best example, of course, is the Eucharistic Sacrifice wherein Christ Himself unites his prayer to the Father with our own. But the other sacraments accomplish the same type of worship in their own way – even the sacrament of Penance. The prayers of today’s Mass offer hope in the Final Coming to those who have kept the Faith with humility rather than the judgment of the proud predicted in last Sunday’s scriptural readings. The famous words: “Look up your salvation is at hand” are meant to give us that hope.
Prayer is an outgrowth of the natural conversation with self which is elevated to a dialogue with God. We then follow the progression from this through the different types of prayer like the theological, the four purposes of prayer, and prayer to the Blessed Trinity and the friends of God.
