Deliver Us, O Lord

Passion Sunday 2020
The last two weeks of Lent are the most sacred and have a special name, Passiontide.  In today’s Gospel, Our Lord proclaimed His Divinity with the result that He had to hide from those who wanted to stone Him.  The Church incorporates this into Passiontide by hiding Christ and all the reminders of Him by veiling the Crucifix and statues.  This year it is more dramatic because many are unable to even come to the chapel.  Given these circumstances we should unite more than ever with the texts of this Mass and cry out for deliverance.  We should practice prayer, especially the Rosary, and all the exercises of the spiritual life with renewed purpose so as to strengthen ourselves, with God’s grace, during this present crisis and for the future.

Bride, Spouse and Victim

Laetare Sunday 2020 – Carmelite Clothing Day
This is a joyful day and a preparation for the total gift of self that is to come at the religious profession.  All has been left behind and that includes any reliance on self because now it is time to rely on God alone.  Religious life is the proximate call to holiness and the ceremony of the clothing in the Carmelite habit is meant to impress this on us.  The habit, especially the Brown Scapular, is the constant sacramental reminder of the call to contemplative prayer and divine union.  As a chosen bride and spouse of Our Lord, the religious is joined to Him on the Cross as a victim for the Church, priests and the salvation of souls.  Do not look back but press on to the goal of union with Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior.

Love Is Life Or Death

This week is the feast of All Saints which honors God in His heroic examples of sanctifying power.  Today is the feast of Christ the King which was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925 to combat secularism and to re-assert God’s rights in modern society which have been denied.  Christ is King in His divinity and in His humanity through the grace of union, headship, priesthood and conquest on the Cross.  He established His Church with rights to teach, rule and sanctify.  We pray daily in the Lord’s Prayer “Thy Kingdom Come”.

Put On The New Man

19th Sunday after Pentecost 2019
Beginning with the words of the Introit we are given peace in the midst of whatever tribulations we experience.  St. Paul in the Epistle tells us that by Baptism we are no longer in sin and must live a new life of grace.  All previous lying, stealing and refusing to work must be abandoned.  Our new life should reach to the control of anger so we only use it when necessary and for good reason.  This state of grace is seen in the Gospel as represented by the wedding garment.  Without this we cannot be saved.  With grace we can show our gratitude to God and rejection of sin, even venial sin.

Redamare

Feast Of The Sacred Heart 2019
Our Lord’s words to St. Margaret Mary about His Sacred Heart are moving and for Catholics they necessitate a heartfelt response to love in return (redamare) for this all consuming source of divine affection for us, His lowly creatures.  Practical means of achieving this are the wearing of the Sacred Heart badge and the frequent reception of the Holy Eucharist wherein our hearts are joined with His.  Union is the essence of the Blessed Sacrament and the goal of this devotion.

Triumph Tinged With Sorrow

The sacramental of the palm is a sign of victory and means of grace.  Use it and the liturgy to fight off the devil who tries to separate us from the Mass and its ministers.  Christ planned His triumphant procession into Jerusalem, the Holy City, to proclaim His Kingship clearly.  This was so evident that He was condemned later in the week for being the King of the Jews.  Today is the original feast of Christ the King but because of the note of sorrow the new feast was instituted.  The entire Holy Week is encapsulated in today’s Mass and ceremonies.

Follow Your Star

Feast Of The Epiphany 2019
The feast of the Epiphany is the manifestation of God made Man and seen in the Holy Infant by the Magi. The Magi were Gentile wise men who were familiar with Hebrew prophecies & recognized in a miraculous star the fulfillment of them in the coming of the Messiah. They had the generosity to follow the star to Bethlehem & be the first non-Jews to see and to adore Jesus Christ.  Each of us is called to follow our own star of attraction which will lead us to Our Lord if we, also, are generous. It is never too late to follow your star.

His Kingdom Of Love

Feast Of Christ The King 2018
After a preview of All Saints and All Souls Days, the sermon proper for the feast of Christ the King begins after the Epistle and Gospel.  Pope Pius XI established the feast in 1925 to counter the secularism that permeates our society.  After an examination of the causes leading up to our modern errors we are given the teaching on the social kingdom of Christ which frees us from the shackles of sin.  Our Lord has given us a kingdom of peace, unity, holiness and above all love.  We must love in return and not despise His love.

The Lord Wept

9th Sunday After Pentecost 2018
This Sunday teaches us to be humble and thankful for God’s gifts lest we lose them for our lack of appreciation.  The Gospel relates the event as Christ was to begin His triumphal entry of Jerusalem on Palm Sunday.  He paused on the Mount of Olives and wept over the Holy City and what would be its punishment for rejecting Him and putting Him to death.  This moment uniquely shows Christ’s divinity and humanity.  All can repent as St. Mary Magdalen and be saved from the fires of hell.

The Necessary Devotion

Sacred Heart 2018
Christ requested this feast of His Sacred Heart to assure us in the latter days of His most merciful love.  This is not an optional devotion because it is the core of the Redemption.  Our Lord has made twelve promises to those who practice it which culminate in the pledge of future glory in heaven.  Now when the world has grown old and cold in its evil the Sacred Heart appears as the cause of hope for all.  For those who wish to draw close to His Heart, the masters of the spiritual life counsel self-denial, constant recollection and prayer.
