Feast of Saints Peter & Paul 2013
In the city of Rome, this feast was celebrated with solemnity rivaling that of Easter. St. Paul is commemorated on the day following this feast because he is not emphasized in the readings for today’s Mass. The altar is draped in red, not only because of the blood shed by these great martyrs, but because these men were on fire with divine love. The great sins they committed became the means of greater sanctification, and God gave them both new names to signify the new lives they would lead for Him alone. The love of these two Pillars of the Church is so great because they were so forgetful of self and so dedicated to God, the Faith, and the Church. What will the usurpers of the church, who fail in their duty of teaching, sanctifying, and ruling, say when they face Saints Peter and Paul on Judgment Day? We must invoke these great saints for a greater faith, hope, and charity in these faithless times.
