Our Sustenance and Protection
Corpus Christi 2018
In a certain sense, this day is the culmination of the liturgical year. Our Lord had a mission in coming to Earth, and we accompany Him in that mission throughout the year. We suffer with Our Lord in His Passion, we rise with Him on Easter, and we are lifted to Heaven at the Ascension. As we progress on this journey, we are in great need of sustenance, and we find this food for our souls in the Holy Eucharist. In imitation of Our Lord and His Apostles the bread and wine are consecrated and transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ. The Precious Blood of our Redeemer was separated from His Body on the cross, and we relive that moment at the double consecration of the Holy Mass. St. Juliana of Liège was inspired to begin the devotion of Corpus Christi, and, because of her influence, the feast of Corpus Christi was established by Pope Urban IV in 1264. Let us proclaim before the whole world that we believe in the true presence of Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar.
