Contempt for the Spiritual
2nd Sunday after Pentecost 2018
In 1954, on the feast of the Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Pope Pius XII wrote an encyclical announcing the unanimous desire of the Catholic faithful to establish a feast day in honor of the queenship of the Blessed Mother. The title of “queen” is awarded to her because of her incomparable vocation as Mother of the King of Kings. She is daughter of the Father, Mother of the Son, and Spouse of the Holy Spirit.
We are given a frightening warning in the Gospel for today’s Mass. We are told of the great feast and how those who were invited excused themselves. We see this parable exemplified by those who show contempt for spiritual things. Excessive attachment to the material world and prioritizing it over God was the fault Our Lord condemned in the pharisees. We cannot be satisfied and truly happy without God, and all that He gives us in this life is for the sole purpose of leading us towards eternal union with Him in Heaven.
