St. Pantaleon

July 27

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 27 of July, repeating indefinitely

He was physician to the emperor Galerius Maximianus and a Christian but by an impious, idolatrous court was deceived. He often heard the false maxims of the world applauded and was unhappily seduced into an apostasy. A zealous Christian called Hermolaus awakened his conscience to a sense of his guilt and brought him again into the fold of the Church. The penitent ardently wished to expiate his crime by martyrdom and to prepare himself for the conflict, distributed all his possessions among the poor when Diocletian’s bloody persecution broke out in 303. Not long after he was apprehended along with Hermolaus, Hermippus and Hermocrates and after suffering many torments they were all condemned to lose their heads. He is ranked by the Greeks amongst the great martyrs.
