Ss. Cosmas and Damian
September 27, 2018
These two Martyrs were first venerated in the East for the innumerable miracles at their tomb at Cyr (in North Syria) where they were martyred during the Diocletian persecution. Their cultus in Rome goes back to the sixth century. On the Thursday of the third week of Lent, when the station is held at their basilica, the Mass is filled with the twofold idea of healing and salvation, recalling two martyred physicians, healers both of bodies and souls. The names of these two saints figure in the Canon of the Mass after those of the Roman martyrs.
