Today we Remember our loved ones who have passed away, but we should also remember all the priests and religious who have given us spiritual help, because they are so often forgotten. We should have no intention of going to Purgatory. All the temporal punishment due to our sins should be remitted in this life, while we can still gain merit for ourselves. The souls in Purgatory can no longer grow in virtue by their suffering as we can now. Because of the false belief in the universal salvation of mankind, practically no one prays for the dead anymore. But the truth is that death is a terrible thing and is a punishment for sin, and it is an act of justice and charity incumbent on all Catholics. to care for the souls of the faithful departed. The Mass of the Dead is sorrowful yet consoling and optimistic, as it reminds us to hope for a happier future. We should pray also for the unsung heroes who have fought for the faith in this time of crisis in the Church; many of whom died alone and forgotten. Death is an inevitability for all of us, and when that time comes, we will appreciate that nothing in this life matters except for God and our union with Him. In God’s mercy, He created Purgatory to cleanse us of all the obstacles which stand between us and divine union.
