Sermon

An Urgent Appeal for the Suffering Souls

Although All Souls’ Day is no longer a holy day of obligation, an obligation of charity still rests upon each of us. We live in a time where practically no one remembers the suffering souls in Purgatory, and God has given each of us the ability to assist them. They depend completely on our prayers, sacrifices, and Masses, because they are utterly incapable of helping themselves. We should remember the departed souls of our loved ones frequently when we gather as a family and always end our meals with a prayer for the faithful departed.

We are all wayfarers who are only here for a short time. We must be prepared for God’s call at every moment because death is independent of old age. In the end, what is most important is love and forgiveness. We should forgive our enemies with all our heart. Charity for the Holy Souls will temper our cruelty and our hardness of heart. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
