Prayers & Aspirations

This pamphlet was printed to aid the faithful in fulfilling Our Lord’s request “that they must always pray and not lose heart” (Luke 18, 1).  St. Paul instructed the early Christians in this way: “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thess. 5, 17).

As the catechism says (page 287):“Through prayer we can procure for ourselves immeasurable spiritual blessings – the power to overcome temptations, no matter how violent, the grace to increase in love for God, and above all, perseverance in the state of grace and eternal salvation.  St. Alphonsus Liguori, who is called the Doctor of Prayer because he wrote so much about it and practiced it so ardently, did not hesitate to say: “He who prays will be saved; he who does not pray will be lost”.

Prayer is the lifting of our minds and hearts to God.  Through it we adore God, expressing to Him our love and loyalty; we thank Him for His favors; we obtain from Him the pardon of our sins and the remission of their punishment; and we ask for graces and blessings for ourselves and others.

We may use our own words in praying to God; however, when at a loss in expressing our sentiments, we can turn to the prayers and aspirations in this pamphlet.

The fifty-one pages of these prayers have been chosen from approved spiritual manuals and many of them are indulgenced.  The prayers are generally short, even aspirations; so to allow the soul to ascend quickly and directly to the heavenly consideration. The prayers are organized by subjects starting with the Blessed Trinity and including the Poor Souls in Purgatory.  It has become a favorite of many who appreciate its selection of prayers and its ease in use.
